Default Indonesian Earthquake Claims Over 5,000 Lives

http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/05/29/indonesia.quake/index.html

"Heavy rain and damaged roads were hindering efforts to help survivors of a major Indonesian earthquake, which officials said killed more than 5,100 people, seriously injured 6,500 and left thousands more homeless. While aid has been trickling in, overwhelmed hospitals were struggling to treat huge numbers of patients with limited medical supplies."

Wow, Indonesia simply cannot get a break. It hasn't really recovered from the devastating effects of the tsunami in December 2004, and now it has been hit by an earthquake that has the death toll above 5,000. We at Pocket PC Thoughts take time out occasionally when there is a disaster of such magnitude to remind ourselves of what is really important.

Everyone has their own particular charity they prefer to give to during times like this. I am linking to two that I know are reputable and have very low administrative overhead. Of course, if you have one you are more comfortable with, then by all means, use that one. The point is to give something back to those that really need it right now.

If I may, I'd like to give a plug for Operation Blessing, one of the most effective first responder organizations to disaster events in Indonesia. Having participated with OB as a pilot in Aceh in 2004, I've seen these professionals in action first hand. Their medical teams and food/disaster kit programs are fantastic, not only because of the speed, quantity, and quality of care they provide, but they are native Indonesian speakers as well.

You'll find more info at their website:
