Default Brighthand: Three Simple Steps to Protect Your Devices and Data

http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?newsID=12236

"Are you safe? I mean with your handheld or smartphone? After reading this article, you will be able to take three simple steps that will help your protect your handheld or smartphone and the data contained in it."

The steps outlined are pretty fundamental to most of us: get a good case, back up your data, and password-protect your device. I always say that in nearly everything imaginable, there's always a balance between security and personal freedom or convenience. In these instances, a case adds bulk, backing up your data takes time & persistence, and password protection takes away some of the "instant-on / instant-access" gratification that we all love in mobile devices. That said, having experienced fumbled devices, involuntary hard-resets / system-lockups, and device theft, it's hard to beat these steps in order to avoid unnecessary heartache!

I concur.

The one personal issue I have with this is that when (more likely a when than an if) I upgrade to a WM5 device, I'll lose the ability to use Nice Start as my password screen. I currently have it setup so that I can enter my password via a combination of button presses, and I find the calendar that it displays on the password screen to be quite useful as I can never remember the date.

Are there any password screen-replacement utilities that work with WM5?

Having to enter a password everytime you access your device is a pain. I encrypt my sensitive files with PocketLock. I use Sprite Backup to automatically backup the RAM to the SD card every week but I have to manually backup the non-volatile memory which is a little bit of a pain - I use the compress feature in Resco Explorer for that. Once I got those 2 files on the SD card I copy them to an external hard drive. I had my device stolen a while back and replacing the device is easy but replacing the files is not.
