Default McAfee to Offer Cingular Wireless Customers Mobile Anti-Virus Security Services

http://www.msmobilenews.com/page/1235/

"McAfee, Inc. (NYSE: MFE), the leading dedicated security technology company, today announced that it will offer Cingular Wireless customers mobile security solutions for business-oriented devices. McAfee provides comprehensive mobile security solutions that are designed to protect against and prevent mobile threats and vulnerabilities. Its flagship product is McAfee VirusScan Mobile. "While mobile threats have presented themselves largely as proof of concept, we think it's important for carriers to get ahead of the curve, and offer proactive and preventative solutions before a significant attack occurs," commented Todd Gebhart, senior vice president of Worldwide Consumer and Mobile Sales at McAfee, Inc."

This is a little dull. Another OEM offering another mobile anti-virus package. With mobile viruses currently posing almost zero threat to the Windows Mobile community, wouldn't it be nicer to see these anti-virus packages focus on the use of mobile devices as a transport mechanism for desktop viruses instead? Of course, you'd have to factor in the size of the virus definitions, but I think that's something half of us are willing to bite on. If a piece of software is going to hog system resources and storage, and cost us a few quid per pop, it may as well offer some benefits, right?

There is almost nothing easier to do a hard reset and start over with as a PDA. Close to zero malware that attack a PDA. Not spending my money on that guys. (and I like MacAfee too!)

You mean Abidia? I'm a little confused - how does this relate to mobile anti-virus software? :?:

For that exact reason, won't it make more sense to have the definitions stored on the desktop, and have your PDA scanned whenever it is docked to your home?

Interesting thought. It'd definitely work well in the home environment. However, if you were to sync your PDA with an unprotected guest PC (say, a friend's or a co-worker's), you'd be at risk of spreading the virus.

And, of course, if you do file exchange via email on the Pocket PC.
