Default HowardChui.com Reviews the i-Mate JAMin

http://www.howardchui.com/modules.p...ticle&artid=236

"When it comes to Pocket PC's, you usually trade features for size. A larger Pocket PC usually has more features than a more portable one. Well that used to be the case until the i-Mate JAMin arrived on the scene. With the JAMin, you get a device that has a 2.0 megapixel camera, 802.11b and 802.11g, 128MB RAM and all the other goodies you'd expect from a large, high end Pocket PC but in a package that is just slightly smaller than your average regular phone. Small is nice but is the JAMin still usable? Read on!"

Howard Chui has written a review of the i-Mate JAMin, so interested buyers should give it a read. The review focuses more on the basic features of all Pocket PCs, but talks a little about the JAMin features. The JAMin looks like a solid update to the JAM.

It's faster than 200 Intel MHz. Unfortunately, that's all I know. After checking out the UT Starcom 6700 yesterday, I'm nearly convinced I'm going to get this phone. CDMA just doesn't to it for me. Unfortunately, I need more info than the one review I've read of the JAMin so far to convince me of that.

I found this page with quite a bit of technical info on the processor.

I have been using a Jamin now for the last month and I can tell you first hand about the pros and cons of using this device.

Pros; does what it says on the box, and does it very well, Windows mobile 5 adds some much needed features which were missing in PocketPC 2003 and the simliar i-mate jam.

Cons: as a previous user of a i-Mate jam I found the Jamin a lot slower (maybe it is becasue of the slower processor) Skype is almost un-useable and menues etc seem to open a lot slower than other PocketPC's even the Jam. I have tried them both side by side and it is a noticable difference in speed.

Conclusion: Would I buy again?
for the features, Wifi, voice dailing, Push email etc.... yes
for conveinience No.. far too slow, I would look for a device with a much faster processor.

Nicely put. I think that helps us prospective buyers.

Indeed it does.

The only problem with the JAMin is the CPU and it is a BIG problem. If it had a 400MHz CPU, I'd likely already own one. Otherwise, I have yet to see another device with quadband GSM, BT2.0, 802.11b/g, and Edge.
