Default Mio A701 Available for Purchase

http://www.mobileplanet.com/product...asp?code=129999

"The new Mio A701 PDA Phone is powered by a 520MHz Intel XScale PXA270 processor and has 64 MB RAM and 128 MB ROM. It features a 2.7-inch full-color QVGA (240 x 320 pixels) TFT screen, SDIO expansion slot, and a built-in 1.3-megapixel digital camera. The Mio A701 incorporates a SirFStar III GPS receiver, mobile phone and PDA functions into one compact, distinctive product. With the SirfStar III chipset incorporated the Mio A701 is capable of quick, reliable satellite fixes. Tri-Band GSM/GPRS phone functionality ensures that the A701 can be used in most countries and for internet and e-mail access. Windows Mobile 5 has been supplied and this provides new features including persistent memory and the latest office applications Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Media Player 10."

Expansys / MobilePlanet have the A701 in stock for US$574.95. It's a sweet Pocket PC Phone Edition with great aesthetic appeal, but alas, it lacks Wi-Fi. Perhaps the upcoming Mio P350 and P550 (which I'll post on later in the day) will tickle your fancy.

REALLY nice looking Pocket PC Phone. 8O

Unfortunately, it does lack WiFi AND Quadband GSM... Which is becoming even more important these days...

Yeah, the lack of WiFi really kills it for me. And there is no AKU2 support it seems either. I can't live without A2DP/AVRCP.

I've had my eye on this device since The Register alluded to it a few months ago.

I've got T-Mobile and could very easily slip my SIM into the A701 and have a fully functional mobile communicator, complete with GPS.

I even considered signing up for a Hosted Exchange account to take advantage of the push email/calendar features of the latest Exchenge updates.

But, no AKU2 means no Microsoft Feature Pack (MSFP). And no MSFP tips the "BUY/NO BUY" scale just enough in the wrong direction.

I've got an email in with Mitec, but haven't heard any word back on an expected ROM update.

So close to nirvana... :: sigh ::

If it had a slide out keyboard like my KJAM, Wifi and Quadband GSM with EDGE, I'd be in nerdvana.

Of course if the KJAM just had GPS, that would work too.

I'm surprised that MobilePlanet is selling this phone.

Is tri-band even useful in the US?

Aren't both Cingular and T-Mobile on the 850 band?
