Just an FYI:

Version 1.0 absolutely refused to uninstall for me no matter what I did (short of file by file/registry entry by registry entry). However, 1.1 did install over the top of it. Only reason I mention it is that I have found overwriting without uninstalling the previous version in WM5 to rarely work when I've tried it in the past. So if you are having similar difficulties, then you can just install 1.1 over the top of 1.0.

Did you soft-reset your device prior to uninstalling?

Owww... *winces* dismal failure! wah! :?

SPB Backup 1.0 worked a treat. 1.1 however, freezes on my Dell x51 (WM5) on the last screen - the one mentioning how it is about to close all running programs - ... you tap next and the whole device freezes!

1.2 better fix it.

No problems here so far, although I've yet to do a restore from a backup. By the by, is it just me, or does this automatically soft-reset after the backup is complete? I left it alone for about ten minutes while it did a backup, and by the time I got back my system was at the Today panel... with about 3-4MB more RAM t han I'd started out with.

Darrel,
tanasta,

I just sent you the private message, please check.

sami3000,
There is a great amount of request for this feature, so we are going to add it to the next version.

It still includes the Reset button if you wish to force an instant soft-reset, but it also includes a background timer which resets your device in 15 seconds (the timer is visible on the screen).

So, to answer your question - the device does automatically soft-reset after a backup.

Darius,

Yep, I did reset. Unfortunately, I'm all too aware of the issues around WM5 installs/upgrades. In fact, I don't generally even bother trying to upgrade anything anymore without soft resetting, uninstalling and then installing the upgrade.

Nicholas,

Thanks for the PM but I was actually able to get it installed. My message was more to let people know they could install it successfully despite WM5's generally poor handling of it. Nevertheless, I appreciate your quick response.

While I'm here, please let me add my voice to the chorus of people asking for the ability to select specific files for restoration instead of in bulk. This is really critical functionality in my opinion. Also, and I suspect a good deal more difficult, would be to provide 'upgrade restores'. That is, following a ROM update the restore would restore your installed programs but otherwise leave the ROM update intact (via registry compare??). SpriteBackup used to have this capability and it made ROM updates something you could really do in a half hour vs. having to reinstall all of your programs over a few hours. You could also use it to go from device to device.

Those suggestions aside, I think you still have the best back up program out there and again I appreciate your quick response.

Default Can't restore

Well, I downloaded an evaluation of 1.1, and did a full backup. All seemed to work well.
Then, my device did something weird and started misbehaving. Aha, great opportunity to test the restore function!
Unfortunately, the restore gets to 100% of the progress bar completed (says it is restoring system), and then hangs. I left it a long while (half an hour) and then got tired and did a soft reset.
The system came back apparently restored, but there are various strange things, and it ends up hanging very quickly. For example, I have Voice Command assigned to the record button (Button 4) of my XDA Exec. However, when I looked at the assignment in Control Panel, I found that TWO apps were assigned to the same button, and the system then promptly hung again.
I think there's some problem in restoring the registry properly.
Anyway, the backup I have is basically useless, since I can't restore it.
Is there something I can do short of re-installing all the apps manually (which is what I was trying to avoid by using the backup program)?
