Default Cingular Introduces International Data Plans

http://www.phonescoop.com/news/item.php?n=1588

"Cingular will launch two new data plans next month for subscribers who often find themselves outside the US. The GlobalConnect plans provide unlimited EDGE and 3G data on Cingular's network and include 100 MB of data roaming per month. The plan is available in two different flavors, a $110 version that includes roaming in Canada and Mexico, and a $140 plan that includes access in most major countries. Cingular will also launch the Option GlobeTrotter GT MAX card at that time. The GT MAX card includes quad-band GPRS/EDGE and tri-band (850/1900/2100) UMTS/ HSDPA. This recently announced card is capable of speeds up to 1.8 Mbps."

As the largest wireless network in the United States, Cingular continues to make great strides with their business customers while being well on their way to provide a 3G network to compete with the already established EV-DO technology used by Verizon Wireless and Sprint. Their biggest dilemma, which would be very interesting to see how it plays out, is the fact that current and future UMTS-capable Pocket PC devices (i.e. HTC Universal, Pocket Loox T800) will not work on Cingular's UMTS network, as it is on a different radio frequency to boot. We'll keep our fingers crossed that some miracle will happen where the US will catch up with the rest of the world or find a way to bridge the gap. In the meantime, Cingular can make your current UMTS device capable of high-speed internet, at least outside the US - but, it will be metered. I suppose unlimited internet access is one of the few luxuries we have over here, along with free refills, partially-hydrogenated snacks, and Super-Sized meals.

Yea, I'll be getting this when I work for a company that pays for it for me. About that time the devil will be buying a parka.
