Decuma 4 is Here! Well, Sort Of.
"Zi Corporation (Nasdaq: ZICA) (TSX: ZIC), a leading provider of intelligent interface solutions, today announced the release of the latest version of its state-of-the art Decuma handwriting recognition. Decuma Version 4 is a new predictive, personal and powerful pen-input solution now available for OEMs to embed. It adds predictive text capabilities, including word completion and increased personalization to handwriting input. It also more than doubles the language repertoire of the award winning Decuma software to 31 languages - including the complex Chinese and Japanese scripts."

We all thought Decuma was "dead", but apparently not. Zi Corporation is showing off Decuma 4 at the 3GSM World Congress this week, with the latest version of Decuma Alphabetic offering some awesome features such as word prediction, dual-language messaging, and a user-defined dictionary and shortcut library. Decuma Chinese offers similar features, plus enhanced character recognition, and support for pinyin. All in all, Decuma supports 31 languages. v4 sounds like a great upgrade, but unfortunately, it appears to be an OEM-dependent embedded release only. I guess we'll simply have to wait and see which Pocket PC manufacturers include it in their devices.

One would think that they can make a lot more profit by selling to current Pocket PC owners, rather than getting tied down to future devices. Perhaps if Microsoft does away with the Transcriber and Letter Recognizer altogether and puts a stable, superior product in its place, then I can see it being worthwhile. Perhaps it will be bought out by Microsoft and be embedded in Windows Mobile 6?

well... great, I haven't been able to use Decuma, I don't remember if it was for the VGA screen or the latest Windows Mobile version... I e-mailed them about a year ago regarding an upgrade and turned me down saying there were no plans. Now I have to wait until someone includes it in a new device?
Great... just great
