Default PDAGold Reviews the Acer n311

http://www.pdagold.com/articles/detail.asp?a=268

"Acer has lately been trying to rid of a label of a producer of low-end or entry-level Pocket PCs. The first such attempt was Acer n50 and now, the manufacturer ventured to the high society of Pocket PC devices with a VGA display. Do not expect an orgy of innovation; on the other hand, the design and some other features make the Acer N300 stand out from the crowd. There are going to be two models. I managed to get hold the more powerful one, Acer n311, for this review. I should stress that it was a pre-production model and the final version may bring some changes..."

A fantastic review from Pavel at PDAgold. The Acer n311 looks like an excellent VGA device, and the review delves into all the nooks and crannies. I particularly liked the part of the review when Pavel was testing the USB host functionality and connected a hard drive and a digital camera. That's just plain awesome. Great review, worth the read.

The interesting thing that I found is that the cradle is used to assist the USB Host... in other words, it supported the device in landscape mode with a keyboard plugged into the back of it. Certainly redefines the usefulness of a cradle, eh?

This device does have me interested... although price will determine how interested I end up being...

Sad to hear about the poor graphics I was almost looking forward to this until I read that. I'll have to wait until some other people buy it and its really "on the shelf" before I cry

Darn poll, I didn't quite read the whole article! The graphic performance is certainly a huge drawback, considering that it struggles playing VGA anything and only does somewhat ok on QVGA stuff...

hmmm...

I am really bummed about the video playback. And it's actually kinda hard to believe. If my old Casio E-100 can do QVGA playback smoothly, this thing should too.

Hopefully they'll figure out the graphics issue, because this would certainly be a device to consider otherwise. It's basically the same size as the HP 1950 they compared it to. Much smaller than any other VGA PPC device in the market today.

Very interesting to see they managed to leave 82 MB of ROM and 35 MB of RAM free - compared to my Universal with only 40 MB of ROM and 28 MB of RAM. Seems HTC has been pretty wasteful with our memory, but we already know that, I guess.

You know, the reviewed device is a pre-production device. Acer has already released bunch of updates for the device in Taiwan. After reading the forum of Mobile01, I know that the earliest models has quite a few issues. However, most of them are fixed by now.

BTW, the newest ROM has this:

I think the currect n300 has AKU 2.1 too.

Any mention of fixes to the graphic performance?

I think this is one instance where an onboard Intel 2700g would have been warranted to take the load off the Samsung processor.

What makes you say that? And, did you mean AKU 2.0?
