Default Western Union Telegram Service. Stop.

http://www.livescience.com/technology/060131_western_union.html

"After 145 years, Western Union has quietly stopped sending telegrams. On the company's web site, if you click on "Telegrams" in the left-side navigation bar, you're taken to a page that ends a technological era with about as little fanfare as possible."

That is the end of an era, and somewhat unfortunate. I understand Jason was working on a subscriber feature that would allow you to get your newsblasts from Pocket PC Thoughts in a telegram. You can read more about the history of telegrams here.

To be honest, I didn't know you could still send telegrams, but then again, for all I know, the Pony Express is alive and well in some western states. 8O

Correct me if I'm wrong but... I recall telegrams being delivered by young adults who sing or read the telegrams to the recipient.

Those are singing telegrams. Not the same as conventional telegrams.

I dont know about anyone else, but I think the USPS has been getting slower with there first class mail. Perhaps they should change the name to Pony Express mail.

Gosh, I remember getting a telegram once... I was living in Holland and my boyfriend in the US sent me one. I'm sure I still have it somewhere. Getting a telegram was such a big deal!! Sad to see the end of an era... but it really should come as no surprise.

Although Western Union is now defunct, there still is a service to send telegrams in different formats, including hand delivered and the singing variety!

Two days or more, delivered anywhere in North America, $30.95 + $.89/word. I don't think so. I get monthly Internet access for less than that.

If spammers had to pay rates like that to deliver their messages, the Internet would be a whole 'nother concept today.
