Default New GigaByte G-Smart - First Windows Mobile Device With MSFP

http://blogs.msdn.com/jasonlan/archive/2005/12/19/505653.aspx

"Some sites have been incorrectly claiming there are delays in AKU 2 availability (which is complete nonsense) - to prove there aren't any delays. Here is the first AKU 2 device - the Gigabyte G-Smart!"

Microsoft's Messaging Security and Feature Pack, also known as MSFP, is included in AKU2 for Windows Mobile 5 devices. We finally have the first shipping device with the MSFP included which, coupled with Exchange 2003 SP2, gives you a significantly improved push email experience over previous Windows Mobile devices, as well as some security enhancements. It looks like a Taiwan only device right now. It is tri-band GSM, has a QVGA screen, 64MB of RAM and ROM and supports 802.11b. It also has a built in TV and FM tuner!

I received an email response to the feedback form on Gigabyte's website, regarding my inquiry of the g-Smart phone. My inquiry was in regards to availability, whether or not an English version will be available, and if USA TV channels can be picked up on the device.

Quote:
Currently we have just launched g-Smart Chinese edition in Taiwan only. In about a month, the English edition will be available, possibly under a different brand, carried by your local distributor.

TV (NTSC/PAL) and FM work in the States. However, the TV signal is weak in certain areas. We tried it in the Bay area (CA); the TV signal is ok in suburban areas, but not so clear in the city where the high rises reflect the signals and the signals become noisy.

If you are an individual consumer, please wait just a little longer. It is coming soon in your area.

Yours,
Peifang

It looks good but FM radio and standard TV are getting a little outdated. How about DAB radio and DVB-H. Now that would be one sleek phone!

Nice to see they've actually tested it. I'm looking forward to an English release.

It features Bluetooth 1.2, and yes, AKU2 enhances the Microsoft Bluetooth stack to support stereo headsets.

I certainly hope they release a US version with the 850 band. Otherwise why bother?

Hmmm...

FM Radio, nice (but not innovative, my old SonyEricsson K700i has one!)
TV Tuner, cool (at least it's the only PPC/PDA to integrate a TV tuner)

BUT!...

[rant]
Why is it that many manufacturers of upcoming devices are so blind and making the same mistakes????

Why so little RAM/ROM????

Windows Mobile requires a substantial amount of RAM/ROM to operate at decent speeds... At least for power users like myself this is simply NOT ENOUGH!

I'll eat my phone if this device succeeds with those pathethic specs! 0X

Is it too much to ask for a device like the Treo 700w but with built in WiFi and 320x320 resolution? (they say it's an OS limitation, but I don't buy it!)

Or the aforementioned Gigabyte and also the HTC Prophet devices with at least 128 megs of available storage?

Or the use of regular SD slots?

And the list goes on and on....

Even the HTC Universal has it's limitations!!!

Come on manufacturers! The technology it's out there already! PLEASE USE IT!!! [/rant]

Merry xmas and happy new year!!!
