E-TEN M600 and O2 Xda Atom Eye Candy for You
These three reviews aren't in English, but there are plenty of great pictures worth checking out. First the E-TEN M600, which can be found at MrPalm.com (Thai) and PPCReviews.net (French). It has a Samsung S3C2440 400MHz processor, 64MB RAM, 128MB Flash ROM, Bluetooth 1.2, 802.11b Wi-Fi, a 2.8" 240 x 320 (QVGA) LCD, a 1.3-megapixel CMOS camera with flash, quad-band GSM/GPRS support, an SD slot, and Windows Mobile 5.0. The second device is the O2 Xda Atom, again at MrPalm.com. This little unit is packed with an Intel PXA272 416MHz processor, 64MB RAM, 128MB Flash ROM, Bluetooth 1.2, 802.11b Wi-Fi, a 2.7" 240 x 320 (QVGA) 262K-colour LCD, a 2-megapixel CMOS camera with flash, an FM tuner, tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support, a miniSD slot, and Windows Mobile 5.0. The M600 looks pretty sweet. I wonder if it will be availabe in the u.s.

The Atom looks very nice, great size, features, etc. UNTIL you get that screen shot that shows the storage memory. 8O It would appear that with 64 MB of ROM, once you sync a decent size PIM database you will have little to no space for ANYTHING else. Keep in mind, some programs feel the need to install some files directly to the device even if you say to install to a storage card.
I think it's going to be tough to use the Atom for anything but a fancy phone and internet browser. HTC really seems to be having a difficult time getting their arms around WM5.0 memory requirements. I can't for the life of me understand why they would go with only 64 MB of ROM, considering how cheap memory is these days.
I am obviously missing something in the whole Storage ROM arena, since it seems to me this memory should not adversely affect battery life, and is super inexpensive these days. I can't for the life of me understand why we haven't seen a device with 1 GB of ROM yet, not to mention 4 GB - if they can put that in a tiny device like a Nano, there can't be any legitimate reason not to put it in a WM device. I know the Muse has been rumored with 4 GB, but that's one very unique device. How about the rest of these new devices? Why are manufacturers skimping in this area? WM5.0 is a memory hog :devilboy:

What kills the Atom for me is the miniSD. The Atom is better in many ways than the M600 too, which hurts even more. If the M600 came with EDGE, it would be a device I could keep for years... Uh, I just answered why they didn't include it this time around!

Arrgghhh, I just noticed that. Why on earth would someone release a GSM device these days w/o EDGE? Someone at Eten must be brain dead.

The M600 isn't your common re-badged HTC device, and since E-TEN is based in Taiwan, I'm sure their local designers originally built it for Asia-Pacific use. Now EDGE is hardly used in the Asia-Pacific, since UMTS totally dominates. That's quite the opposite for North America. Is E-TEN brain dead? I wouldn't say so. It's just a matter of practicality being seen here.

Yeah, what bites is that some upcoming devices are rumoured to include microSD. Now that's overkill.

I think that's just a side-effect of it being a pre-production model. Official specs indicate that it will include 64MB RAM and 128MB Flash ROM, which is standrd amongst today's Pocket PC Phone Edition devices.
