Geekzone Reviews Calligrapher 8.1
"The current release of Phatware Calligrapher 8.1, comes with great out-of-the-box recognition, continuous learning of your handwriting, and a 100,000+ word dictionary. It also adds a truckload of helpful features, some of which well look at later in this review...Advances specific to 8.1 over 8.0 are an improved Write Pad SIP and support for Windows Mobile 5.0."
The review has lots of screenshots -- if you've been thinking of buying the latest version of Calligrapher, check it out.

I used to use Calligrapher as my primary sip, but switched over to Fitaly a while ago. The primary reason for this is, as noted in the review, that Calligrapher occupies 3.2MB of memory. Whether that's both Write Pad and Write Anywhere, or just one of the two, I don't know as I didn't do an exact before and after check when I installed and then eventually uninstalled the latest version.

Calligrapher is Crap
When I first heard about this software (in version 4 or 5 I believe) I was so exited. This was exactly what the PocketPC/windows Mobile is about. Ease of use. I tested the product back then and really liked it except for one thing...
No support for non-English letters!!
I live in Sweden and we heavily use the characters , and . None of these was supported at that time. So I wrote Calligrapher a E-mail informing them about this omission.
When the next version showed up, I did the same procedure. And again at the next version.
I tried the new version (8.0) a couple of weeks ago and guess what No support for non-English letters.
What really bugs me is that you cant add you own characters to the character set. So disappointed again I must declare this software for utter crap.
I have given up on this software that it will ever work for me.

I've used Calligrapher versions 6 and 7, and didn't have any problems with foreign characters, i could write in Portuguese language (which has many accented characters), and the recognition was excellent, as long as i had the Portuguese dictionary active. My only complain is it takes a lot of memory. But then i heard about Fitaly and tried it... I took some time to get used to the keyboard layout, but after that i found out that i can write much faster than i did with calligrapher... But that's my opinion. Anyway, calligrapher is an excellent product.

I tried the beta of this software and it I found version 8.0 to be a big improvement over previous versions. I really liked the Write Pad mode that uses the SIP for entry. It did actually learn over time and I found the accuracy improved significantly the more I used the software - which is no small feat since I have absolutely horrible handwriting.
However, I ended up getting a JasJar with the sweet keyboard instead of actually buying the software. Still seems to work better for me. However, if you typically use character recognition of some sort on your device, I think you should really give this software a go, it really was very good.
