Sony Release Eagerly Awaited, Popular New Memory Format. (This Title is Only Partially True)
Im not going to start the usual rant about Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, memory Stick Duo, CompactFlash this, ConpactFlash that I dont have the willpower anymore, I give in. So here is yet another truly wonderful and wholly necessary Sony form. CompactVault is its name and this latest CompactFlash card holds up to 5GB of data. . . Transfer rates hit 96.7Mbps and the fully reinstated King of Proprietary is trying to push it primarily for use in its high end digital SLR cameras. . . Thankfully CompactVault will be compatible with existing CompactFlash Type II slots (I cant see how it had any other choice then again?!) and an adaptor is available if you dont have one of those. . . .[F]or the life of me I really cant see the point of further confusing an already bewildered public with yet another memory format, but thats Sony for you"
OK, this topic has been mentioned before on several occasions, so I'll keep my comments short. This sums it up for me.  :| How about you guys?

Hmm, I think you left out the link to the cited news article.
I'm no fan of Sony's memory card formats either, but hey, at least it's compatible with CF Type II.

should have had a poll:
What do you think when sony introduces a new memory card format?
1) I hate it when sony introduces a new memory card format.
2) I REALLY hate it when sony introduces a new memory card format.

Sony, the cartoon villain.
Sony reminds me of a cartoon villain who in every episode tries some new and pathetically doomed way to rule the world. How many years now have they been releasing proprietary this and that. Seriously, how many years?

Ok, so now Sony wants to enter a "standards" market with this CV or Compact Vault.....
I guess this is ok for people out there that are stuck on the name brand of Sony, and I assume they are also thinking about their LCD and Plasma based TVs that have a multi-slot built in.
<-- Are there any built-in DRM???
If not, I don't have a problem with this device (surprisingly) if it is a true Compact Flash based/compatible memory card.

This product does NOT look like another format!!
It looks like a standard CompactFlash HDD (look at all the bolts).
If it did require an adaptor it would be smaller to accomodate this adapter and still fit the closed CF slot found in the relevant digicams.
I'm very puzzled about this: different memory format?? adaptor needed??
It looks otherwise to me. Compact Vault seems a trademark name not a format.
By the way a few months back Sony did release a card called Microdrive, reportedly a rebranded Hitachi MD.

a quick Google yields:
http://www.sony.net/Products/Media/Compactvault/
something that looks very official and clearly states the CV is a CF+ type II card, so no adapter needed and NO NEW FORMAT EITHER!! (for once!!)
Amen 8)
Me thinks it might be a MD of their own, not really sure either.
But Seagate I think, announced a couple of month back that they are to release an 8GB MD soon!!

So - in essence this story boils down to: 'Sony release 5GB Microdrive and call it Compact Vault'. No new memory format. Nothing proprietary about it at all.
Am I missing something here? As it stands it looks pretty much this is one occasion when Sony *hasn't* gone its own way...!?
