Mail Server Temporarily Down
To put it short and sweet: the magical orb of energy that keeps our mail server running in high spirits just went "ka-put". If you've sent us emails over the past hour or two, we probably won't end up receiving it (so you will have to try again later). We're working to have the issue resolved as soon as possible, and will keep you posted as soon as order has been restored. Thanks for your patience.

Don't mailing servers keep retrying to send E-mail if they can't contact your mail server? If so, nobody should need to resend you E-mail. In fact, that would be bad because you'd get duplicates.

Not always. In this particular case, all feedback notification messages I've received have indicated a permanent failure to send, not a delayed one. For what it's worth, it's better to be safe than sorry to receive the duplicates than none at all.

Can't contact is one thing. In this case, a configuration error seems to be causing the mail server to actively reject email, which generates a permanent failure, so the mail will not be redelivered automatically.

When the post said the "magical orb of energy went kaput", that made it sound like the mail server had lost power (and therefore couldn't be contacted by other servers). That's the problem with "cute" explanations, I guess.
In the words of Emily Latella, "Never mind." :-D
