ARM Introduce Cortex-A8 CPU
"Chip designer Arm is unveiling the latest generation of processors that will power future mobile phones. Processors built with the Cortex A8 design will have more than one billion transistors on board and will be many times more powerful than current ones. Phones using A8 chips will be able to play high-quality video or handle speaker-independent voice recognition. Arm said it expected handsets and other gadgets using the chip design to appear in large numbers in 2007/2008."
The BBC is reporting that the A8 chips currently top 1,000 Dhrystone Mip (Dips), while future versions could hit 2,000 Dips. The CPUs run at 600Mhz in 'low power' mode and can run at over 1Ghz for high performance processing. That's a lot of horsepower in a small low-powered package. Apart from phones, the CPUs are intended for use in set-top boxes, handheld games machines as well as in cars. The full ARM press release can be found here.

I don't know why I hadn't thought about this before, but as I read this, it occured to me that neither AMD nor Intel seem to have made a significant impact in PPC (or other handheld) MAIN processors. Granted, Intel has a couple graphics chips floating around out there, in a couple of PPC models, but neither company really makes any processors that the PPC manufacturers use as the main chip.
Makes ya wonder how long until one or the other makes a serious bid to buy ARM outright...
(hmmm...wonder what ARM stock is trading for, these days...)
