1-View Now Officially Released
"i-mate USA, a specialist in Windows Mobile- based devices and supportive applications, today announced the launch of 1-View, an innovative software that allows users to instantly access their music, photos, videos, documents and other files wherever they are, on whatever PC or i-mate device they are using. 1-View is available for all i-mate devices running Windows Mobile 2003 SE Pocket PC and Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC, and can operate over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPRS, EVDO, 3G and Edge wireless networks. Among the features of 1-View, users can wirelessly access files on all their PCs from any i-mate device; upload files and data from their i-mate device to a PC; download documents, music, photos and videos from any PC to an i-mate device; download music and videos from PCs to an i-mate device; instantly access their digital photo collections from anywhere, anytime; access a home PC from a laptop at work, or a laptop at work from a home PC; view a device bar showing all connected PCs and mobile devices, and a unified listing of all files."
Last Sunday, we posted a teaser on 1-View, i-mate's $89.99 remote access solution designed exclusively for its own Pocket PCs. With it, you can use your i-mate device to securely download and upload music, photos, videos, documents, and other data files to and from your home or work computer. 1-View currently supports the i-mate PDA2, PDA2K, JAM, JAM 128, JASJAR, and K-JAM. Support for i-mate Smartphones will be available in the near future. A features demo can be found here, and a tutorial can be found here. If you don't mind shelling out $90, then 1-View is probably worth checking out.

Doesn't orb do all of this for free?
If 1-view stored the files for me on a server somewhere that would maybe make it worth the $90.
If you are saavy enough to figure out how to map an incoming connection through your router to your desktop then it seems you'd be saavy enough to just setup an FTP client and server.

1-view does store any files you download on the 1-view server. Also, I believe the 1-view software creates an outbound connection to the 1-view server from you PC so no inbound firewall rules are required. Does this help?

You're right, it's a step in the right direction. It looks like they cache 15 mb worth of files between your pc and your device. And the client on the PC connects to their servers so accepting incoming connections shouldn't be a problem.
I'm checking orb out again right now. They use a standard browser interface on the PDA I think - not as easy as a dedicated client.

Yes, Orb is web-based. The major factor differentiating it and 1-View is the interface. 1-View is driven on a well-developed stand-alone interface, and the service itself offers a bit more than what Orb does. Then again, Orb is helping to extend functionality with third-party plugins, so it's hard to say which is the better product. 8)

I got my 1GB miniSD for less than that. Worst case scenario, you get the same Sandisk model I did and get some change. Better case, you get a better model
