Default Qualcomm Jumps on the Bandwagon of Converged Cellular & WiFi Technology

http://www.qualcomm.com/press/relea...ilips_wlan.html

"QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a leading developer and innovator of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and other advanced wireless technologies, today announced that QUALCOMM's Mobile Station Modem (MSM) chipsets will support Philips' wireless local area network (WLAN) module. This integrated solution will offer connectivity to WLAN networks as well as to existing cellular networks and will feature compatibility with 802.11b and 802.11g protocols on both CDMA2000 and WCDMA (UMTS) networks."

You may recall an earlier post back in July regarding a joint-venture between Samsung and LG Electronics to bring UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) to their future handsets, basically combining WiFi with cellular to provide some interesting new capabilities, especially in the area of VoIP (Voice-over-IP). It appears that Qualcomm has now joined the fray with the same type of convergence. It'll be interesting to see what the reaction is from cellular companies once these handsets begin to roll-out. VoIP may be a winning proposition for consumers, but for cellular companies, it'll likely be treated as a threat.
