Default Palm Sued Over Treo Quality

http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,122653,00.asp

This wouldn't be of much interest to Pocket PC Thoughts readers except many of us are eagerly anticipating the forthcoming Windows Mobile Treo.

"The plaintiffs claim that phone calls placed by the Treo 600 were indecipherable because of the poor quality of the phone's speakers and choppy delivery of the user's voice, according to the complaint. Gay cited problems with the Treo 650's software, claiming the device crashed up to ten times a day. The plaintiffs believe these problems afflict numerous Treo owners and are attributable to Palm, not the wireless carriers that sell the device, said Ira Rothken, an attorney with Rothken Law Firm and co-lead counsel for the plaintiffs, in an interview Wednesday. Each of the plaintiffs attempted to resolve their issues through Palm's customer support office, but they claim that Palm would replace their Treos with equally defective models, Rothken said."

A phone crashing 10 times a day is unacceptable, but I don't know if it is a problem with the hardware, operating system or a combination. I have heard many Palm users claim that new Palm devices are far less stable than they were in the good old days of OS4 devices. I am definitely interested in a WM Treo for my wife, and she is on the Verizon network, the network rumored to get the device first. Reading this article though is making me think we won't be lining up for a new device but waiting a month or so and monitoring the boards for user experience. :|

I completely understand the sentiment of these people. The Treo 600 and 650 are really awesome designs, but they are amazingly unreliable. I am surprised this didn't happen sooner...

I had both the Treo 600 and 650 for a time and I never really had any stability problems. For the Treo 650, once I weeded out a few finicky apps due to compatibility problems with the new file system, I never had a 650 crash in about three months of use. If I were Palm, don't settle, I'd let it go to court. If they can produce witnesses who said, well, basically what I just said, it would be an easy win I would think.

As far as the call quality for the 600 goes, I didn't really have it long enough to comment on that.

We've been testing a number of Trea 650's and haven't had any issues at all with them... now the Siemen's SX66s we have been testing have been a PAIN.

Default we've had lots of problems

We've got lots of these deployed, almost all the 600's have been replaced with 650's. We had tons of problems with the 600's (not counting the fact that their reception is poor). The 650 haven't had as many problems but still have far too many and do lock-up/reboot far too often. Being a pocket pc person I blame the os for the lockups and reboots The 650's do have much better reception then the 600's. - I should note, this is what I'm hearing from users and the dude who manages them.

Agreed. People will sue for the most senseless things in this country. It is a shame.
