Default Mobile Device Users Want Better Batteries

http://hardware.silicon.com/pdas/0,...39152510,00.htm

"Mobile TV and MP3 players are all very well, according to mobile phone users, but longer battery life is top of their feature wish-list. A survey of global mobile users by research firm TNS found that two-thirds of phone and PDA owners said the most essential feature for a converged device is a two-day battery life span."

The title of this thread links to an article that is accurately named, "Stop giving us rubbish batteries, say mobile users" - and they're not wrong, are they? Every geek's dream mobile device has a fast processor, an insanely powerful GPU, never-ending amounts of RAM and ROM, and a screen that would make you cry with joy... but what about better battery life? There's no denying that consumer battery technologies have remained relatively steady over the past few years. Sure, we hear about all these new concepts being conceived in laboratories, but when will they start appearing in consumer devices? Toshiba recently took the first step forward, and hopefully, other companies will follow over the next year or so.

There is no doubt about it. We need much more power in ever smaller devices. Battery tech seems to be at a relative standstill compared with tech in general.

While I like the fuel cell idea I'm not sure I could get used to squirting liquid at my PocketPC.

Hopefully we will see some huge breakthrough sometime soon. If we did, it would help a lot more than just our mobile toys! Imagine a battery car that can go 1000km on one charge.

I just dropped $50 on a solar charger and emergency charger - all in the quest to achieve a better illusion of true mobility! I'll certainly buy into the everyone's desire for better battery life - but not at the expense of the rest of the features we've come to enjoy!

You win some, you lose some. It seems with all the devices that have come out over the past year, we haven't been able to enjoy something that pulls the best from both worlds. If my X50v could get more hours out of the standard battery, I'd be one happy man.
