Pretec 4GB MMC Plus Revealed - Expandable to 2TB
"Pretec Electronics Corp., the 1st in the world to demonstrate MMC 4.0 card since 2004, and the 1st in the world to offer 4GB SD card since July 2005, has released 4GB MMC Plus 266X, the largest capacity MMC card, and the fastest flash memory card in the world, today at IFA 2005 (Hall 7 1B, Booth #124) in Berlin. Theoretical maximum speed of today's popular MMC 3.x and SD 1.0 cards are 2.5MB/s (16X) and 12.5MB/s (83X) in SD's favor, however, theoretical maximum speed of advanced specifications call for much higher speed of MMC 4.x at 52MB/s (346X) vs. SD 1.1 at 25MB/s (166X). Pretec 4GB MMC Plus 266X, with access speed up to 40MB/s, doubling the speed of recently announced Pretec 4GB SD card 133X, is the fastest small form factor flash memory card of any format in the world. Pretec 4GB MMC Plus is available now for key customer sampling with unit price of $699 each, mass production is scheduled by Q4 of this year."
A Pocket PC and a 4GB MMC Plus is a match made in heaven, but $699 isn't exactly pocket change. It might be worth waiting until a 2TB MMC surfaces, so uh-huh, we'll keep you posted as soon as we find one. ;-)

MMC was never really dead, and even if it was perceived to be, it was given new life over the past few months with the huge speed boost seen in MMC Plus. SD1.0 and SD1.1 can't offer the speed that MMC Plus can at the moment, though I'm sure in a few months time, we may see an improvement to the SD specification.

miles ahead of the 3K8 microdrive - no matter that its 4gig compared to 8. The inherent advantages of SD are clear.
Still I want to see SD cards hit above 4GB+
Thats the critical point for me --> fitting DVD images onto SD *sweet*, and also making the lower capcacity cards more affordable.
All this progress atm is very encouraging and I say Viva le revolutione!

I thought SD and MMC were pretty much the same thing -- SD having built-in DRM functionality where MMC does not. Frankly, I've never used the DRM features of SD and really don't know what apps or services use it.
I still use my 128 MB MMC in my current PDAs -- it's worked great in any SD slot I've stuck it into so far!

About the title- by "Expandable to 2TB": after re-reading the text a couple of times, I can only conclude this is just a poor translation for "maximum possible capacity for a MMC card will be 2TB"? Or am I totally off ? ops:[/list]

Yes, but there's no reason why it can't be achieved in the future. I guess that's why Pretec titled their PR that way, and hence was the influence behind the title of this thread.

MMC cards are actually thinner, the Nokia 6230 for example won't physically take an SD card, who thought this crap up is beyond me, but then flash memory and common sense rarely meet.
No idea why anyone would want a DRM capable card ,only advantage obviously is that SD slots can be SDIO, but MMC will work in any SD slot
