Shorthand-Aided Rapid Keyboarding (SHARK) Ready for Release?
"The idea of remembering word patterns and connecting the dots might not sound like an easy way to write an e-mail. But IBM researchers are betting that tracing letters on a touch screen will become the way to write on a handheld device like a PDA or mobile phone. They have developed software that works by recognising the patterns of words. "In the long run this will be one of the major interaction methods for mobile devices," said IBM researcher Shumin Zhai. Dubbed Shark (Shorthand-Aided Rapid Keyboarding), the team say the software is ready to go into commercial development and could be bundled with PDAs in the coming months."
We've posted on SHARK before so it isn't really new news, but the team at IBM's alphaWorks believe that they are now ready to develop a commercial application utilising this technology for use on handheld devices. At around 60-70 words per minute, this is something worth keeping an eye out for in the near future.

another input program, sounds interesting.. but do we really need another input program on the market that promises faster and better?
i would assume by now most of PPC used have already gotten used to one method or anther and now you can get keyboards already inbuit into the PPC.

I for one can never get enough of looking for the fastest input program. anyone tried speedscript? it also promises above 60wpm input.
i don't see the ibm solution being that great - uses a standard qwerty keyboard?

Wow, you said it in all caps so it must be true :roll:
This looks like an interesting app, but 60 WPM?
How accurate is this app anyways? It looks like there are some ways where it either wouldn't recognize a word.

Coz it doesnt make sence, 60 WPM??? and as u mentioned how accurate will it be??? so thats why i'm with the built-in ones :wink:

I have to agree with Marcel--Can't ever have too many methods to try. People are always improving and innovating.
One thing, though. I know the screen posted here shows qwerty, but they have also put a lot of thought into the atomik layout. Also, I see no reason why the user could not use any layout they wanted, be it Fitaly, Qwerty, Speedscript(ish with vowels).
If someone actually turns this into a commercial product with real revenue, I bet we'll see some nice things come from it. I'm excited about this.

I have tried the beta tablet version and I like what I saw. I definitely would get this one if it comes out for PPC. Any speed in inputting on my PPC helps. My current favorite is Decuma Onspot, I'm beta testing the new calligrapher, but its pretty bloated, but good.
