10GB MicroDrive On Show
Obviously, 8GB wasn't good enough for the folk at Tohoku University, who have just caused media buzz with their 10GB perpendicular storage MicroDrive. Now, if you were smart, you wouldn't be drooling over this just yet. At the rate at which these are being made, you could probably expect a 12GB MicroDrive by next week, and maybe 20GB by mid-summer. No, really. ;-)

I have one of the early 10Gb iPods. Great machine. Slightly too small for my 12.5Gb music collection ... Once I can get a 15Gb or larger microdrive I can get a Mugen extended battery for my PDA and donate the iPod to my wife :-)

As storage capacity on small footprint cards and the power/speed of PDA processors increase I keep wondering how long it will be before Microsoft abandon the 'mobile' operating system and just give us XP and Office applications in silicon.

10GB 1" drive sounds good, but I might be inclined to spring for a 60GB 1.8" drive instead (since I already have 30-40GB of MP3s alone), if I can find a good product that is.
Is there such a thing as a 60GB PC Card (CardBus) which on the other end has a USB or mini USB connector. So that I can either insert it into a laptop's PC Card slot, or connect it as a bus-powered USB drive (in either case it would not require any extra driver).
I'd be very grateful if someone knows of such a product. Or even better, how about just an empty PC Card shell casing to house my own 1.8" hard drive (for example, I can salvage the 60GB 1.8" hard drive from the ThinkPad X41 notebook, or the iPod Photo).

I highly doubt it for the foreseeable future. Given the MS LongHorn hardware requirements in the like of a quad bi-turbo engine (one for each wheel) Ferrari with booster rockets, it will take at least 10 years until Intel can catch up with a CPU that's small enough and doesn't require an industrial freezer to cool it down :twisted:.

Not quite. The 10Gb is ready to ship, but the report you point to is from April and says that the technology will get to 20Gb at some point.
