Default Seagate Announces Its 8GB, 1-Inch Hard Drive

http://www.seagate.com/products/con.../st1series.html

"Seagate is the first to offer an 8GB, 1-inch hard drive - the industry's highest capacity - with new, more advanced technology in the widely adopted ST1 Series hard drive for handheld applications. The 8GB Seagate ST1 Series can hold up to 200 hours - or 4,000 songs - of high-quality music files (128 kbps), a breakthrough for pocket-size music players and entertainment devices. With 8GB, consumers will keep larger-than-ever libraries of music, video and digital photos in their pockets. Seagate's ST1 Series also delivers important and unique features for handheld applications. Seagate's exclusive RunOn Technology ensures consistent music playback while in a high-motion environment, such as jogging - the drive actually senses and compensates for motion to stay on track. Seagate also delivers technology that protects the drive against shock from accidental system mishandling, increasing the robustness of the devices into which it's integrated."

In its recent press release, Seagate announced its newest hard drive designed for handheld devices. The 8GB, 1-inch ST1 series hard drive operates via an ATA Flex or CompactFlash interface, which makes it suitable for both integrated and add-on applications. So, what's next? 10GB? 12GB? ;-)

That's great news

Incidentally, does anyone know what is the absolute largest capacity currently available for a 1.8" HDD? Is it 60GB or 80GB?

I'm looking to buy the smallest-possible external USB HDD with at least 60GB capacity, which can run off USB bus power. Does anyone know of such a product using 1.8" drive instead of 2.5" drive.

Perhaps I should just go ahead buy another iPod (Photo) instead

Nah I'll take a CF HDD with my PDA anytime!!

Especially if you watch Seagate's video from the above link you'll see how tough their design is, so most probably your drive will outlive your PPC anyway 8).

The upside to this is greater compatibility as well. You can take one drive from one device and swap it over to the next. You can't do that with an integrated one.

Not only you can move your CF (SD) cards from one device to the next, you can also use it at any time in different devoces: digicams, moviecams, MP3 players, etc.

Look at the aweful Palm LifeDrive:
- huge
- slow
- heavy
- large battery that makes the device huge and heavy
- and the battery isn't removable so you can't swap it with a spare
- and what's even more intolerable is that it's a power hog; so a fixed battery makes it even more impractical

So an integrated HDD?

NO THANKS, it's just good for media players, not for PDAs.

Not yet. If something were to happen (let's say the odd case of excessive shock), I'd rather my CF card be rendered unusable than my entire device.
