Default MicroOLAP Technologies Releases CHM eBook Reader v2.4

http://www.microolap.com/products/pda/chmreader/

"CHM (also known as "compiled HTML") is a most common Microsoft Windows file format for help and documentation. One CHM file can contain many HTML files, images, archives and other files. Plenty of Microsoft documentation, eBooks, manuals, help files are stored in CHM format. CHM Reader for Pocket PC enables mobile reading all of them. Product key features: Opening CHM files of any size not longer than in 2 seconds, Full-Text Search within CHM file, User-friendly graphical interface that accurately reproduces the interface paradigm of the CHM reader for desktop Windows PC platform, Support for both Windows Mobile Pocket PC 2002/2003 platforms"

A few months ago, I tried really hard to find a solid freeware CHM reader for the PocketPC so I could read through a program tutorial while away from home. Well after several hours of frustration with free solutions, I finally trialed the CHM eBook Reader and it was fantastic! Admittedly, I didn't keep it for long as I rarely need to read CHM files on my PPC, but I was impressed with the product nonetheless. For previous users, the new version adds support for merged CHM/COL files, external JS files, MultiFrame pages, amongst other things. For those interested, you can obtain a copy here at PocketGear for $14.95 [Affiliate].

Great news!

I've also liked their CHM reader a lot - it's indeed better than competing CHM readers IMHO.

I've tested the reader.

The best thing over the previous version, 2.3.1, is that Display/Text Size is always settable. With version 2.3.1, a lot of times the drop-down list was entirely cleaned up (especially after using the true VGA mode) and CHM Reader has only occassionally shown the other options. This has greatly reduced the usability of that version, especially with books that are prone to horizontal scroll.

Version 2.4 doesn't have this bug any more.

The problems of the underlying PIE engine aren't gone, however. The images are low-res in SE mode, on VGA devices, and the problem of the 'wide tables' are still present. In all these cases, switching to native VGA mode helps (if you don't use uBook). Fortunately, now that the font size is always settable, switching between the two screen modes has been made much easier.

Therefore, I really recommend switching to this version for previous 2.3.1 users with VGA devices.

Hey Menneisyys, I just realized that your website was one of my resources during my search for a CHM reader a few months back. That was an informative roundup you did on CHM readers! :way to go:

Default Any updates

Has the situation changed on freeware CHM solutions? I too am spending quite a lot of time trying to track down a decent free solution but am having no luck. All assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to PPCT

Not really. Much as CHMReader.NET has been updated to PPC HelpReader V3.0 and there are some new uBook versions (with the same CHM support, it seems), still the olap reader is the best.

Also see my review of the latest, 2.5 version here if interested.
