Default Microsoft LCS to Support Windows Mobile...5.0?

http://www.pcworld.com/news/article...n041905X,00.asp

"Users of Microsoft's Live Communications Server (LCS) will be able to access this enterprise instant messaging platform from mobile devices, the Redmond, Washington, vendor plans to announce this week. Microsoft is developing a client front end to LCS that will go into beta testing in the second half of this year and that will be based on the Windows Mobile operating system."

I'm not very plugged into the enterprise scene, so I have to admit I've never heard of LCS before - but given the rumblings we've heard about Microsoft taking on RIM in a big way, it stands to reason they'll leverage current products to work better with Windows Mobile devices. It's actually part of an official corporate strategy called "Working better together" meaning all Microsoft products are supposed to work well with other Microsoft products. We haven't seen a lot of real features from this strategy (why can't my Pocket PC automatically download my Outlook email account settings?), but we can always hope.

Something else caught my attention though. Check out this quote:

"The mobile client will run on Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition and Windows Mobile 5.0. Three types of devices will immediately be supported: the Pocket PC, Pocket PC Phone Edition, and Smartphone."

Windows Mobile 5.0? If that's a typo, it's an accurate one - whatever Windows Mobile OS Microsoft releases next will be the fifth iteration: Pocket PC, Pocket PC 2002, Pocket PC 2003, Pocket PC 2003 SE...Windows Mobile 5.0? What do you think of the name?

Well, since Windows Mobile 2005 (Magneto, whatever) is based on Windows CE 5.0 I don't think the name's so weird

The first Windows CE-based devices I owned were called "Palm-sized PCs." But this would still be 5.0 if you considered 2003 and 2003 SE to be two iterations of a single version.

Ah ... I thought it went
1. Pocket PC
2. Pocket PC 2002
3. Windows Mobile 2003
4. Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition
5. Windows Mobile 2005 / Magneto / Windows Mobile 5.0 / Dunno?

Or possibly more correctly:
1. Pocket PC
2. Pocket PC 2002
3. Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC's
4. Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition for Pocket PC's
5. Windows Mobile 2005 for Pocket PC's ????

Cheers,

Nah, I wouldn't count the HPC and PsPc devices in there...the Pocket PC was such a radical shift in user interface it's fair to call it a new breed of device.

In the Magneto ROM that leaked out recently, the About section of Settings said the device was running Windows Mobile 5.0.

I still think its going to be called Windows Mobile 2005, though.

Well that's a drastic improvement over what we have now - it's so confusing to look in the About screen and see a six digit Windows CE version number that makes no sense...
