PocketTV v1.0.2 w/ Optimized VGA Support for Dell Axim x50v
According to the linked Brighthand post from the PocketTV team themselves:
"PocketTV 1.0.2 has been released, with support for the Intel 2700G video hardware accelerator present in the Dell Axim x50v. This means full support for VGA-resolution MPEG files playing at full framerate with amazing image quality. You can get PocketTV Classic (FREE) from the download section of www.pockettv.com"
Looks like the PocketTV team has already upgraded this to v1.0.3 with what I assume are minor bug fixes. If you are a Dell Axim x50v owner looking for an MPEG player that is optimized for VGA resolution, then give this a go. Note that while this software release specifically brings about new capabilities for Dell Axim x50v owners, it should generally be compatible with most all PPC/WM devices.

If you're just viewing movies then I'd stick with Betaplayer but if you want to take snapshots of a frame in a movie then this software might be useful.

dvd ripping
I only rip dvd's that I own and I hope you do the same.
DVD Decryptor is freeware and works great. Use that get get the vob files off the disc.
Then I use PocketDivxEncoder, also freeware to mpeg4 the files for betaplayer. You can easily get a 1GB vob file down to under 50MB!!! I use 320x240 because the that saves a lot of room over 640x480 and the quality is still excellent on a screen that small. Select Toshiba e800 as your pocket pc in pocketdivixencoder if you want 640x480 output.
Sorry I don't have time to look up the links for you. The results drop the jaws of everyone I show it to.
By default the audio syncing is a little off. There is an option in pocketdivxencoder you can turn on to fix this but encoding takes much longer. Hold the mouse cursor over the different options in the "advanced" section of pocketdivxencoder and one of them mentions the audio syncing.
