Default Spam Coming To A VOIP Client Near You

http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,66512,00.html?tw=rss.TEK

"Over the past year, experts have repeatedly warned that VOIP abuse is inevitable. The National Institute of Standards and Technology put out a report last month urging federal agencies and businesses to consider the complex security issues often overlooked when considering a move to VOIP. NIST is a member of VOIPSA. "It is really just a matter of time before it is as widespread as e-mail spam," said Michael Osterman, president of Osterman Research."

AAAUUUUUUUUGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! :soapbox: I think Jules said it best when it comes to what should be done with spammers and their ilk in Pulp Fiction.
Quote: "The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee."

I haven't gotten into VoIP for two simple reasons.

1. Haven't taken the time to figure out what I'd have to do to use it.
2. Cheap long distance on my home / mobile phone.

Since I haven't made an international call in, well, like forever, there isn't any value there for me. But, if I did international, I would have already installed it most likely.

What I do know is that to leverage VoIP, I would have to go with Cable broadband over DSL. And, that would end-up costing me more per month than simply using my DSL and all-you-can-eat Verizon long distance service at home.

Default VOIP - Should be called - yikes...

I don't use it. Seems like anyone I am interested in talking to has heard just about everything I have to say on just about every topic. My DSL and Verizon long distance service has serving me well.

It is a very liberating thing to consider that if someone wants your opinion, they'll call you - why should I pay to tell someone what I think?

I would like to try VOIP but it seems that all the vendors lock there hardware so it can not be used by other providers. I have seen some hacks to get around it but its still a lot of work. It would be great to buy one box that you can switch providers as the competition grows. I am sure in the near future it will be $5 a month per line for unlimited calling the USA.
