Default On2 Technologies Announces Ports To Pocket PC and MS Smartphone

http://www.pdatoday.com/more/2649_0_1_0_M/

"On2 Technologies, Inc., The Duck Corporation, today announced that it has ported its VP6.2 video decoder software and Truecast Player to Windows mobile-based Pocket PC and Smartphone devices. The company said its ability of showing high-quality video at very low data rates well under 100 kbps on these mobile devices is critical to pursuing the handheld PC and cellphone markets. The company also said that it has begun demonstrating VP6.2 on these devices to both existing and potential customers."

One of the reasons why I didn't add any comments is that I too am a bit confused about what it actually means.

Basically, On2 (formerly known as the Duck corp.) released a really cool video codec a while back that can be used to compress video to phenominal, revolutionary levels.

Now, On2 is going to offer the decompressor for this highly compressed video for users of Windows Mobile.

Let's say I took my digital camcorder to the football stadium and recorded the game. When I got home, I'd dump the data on my home computer and open it up with On2CompI or VirtualDub. I then compress it with VP6 to derease the file size by insane levels while still maintaining quality. Finally, I put the compressed video on my 64MB memory card and watch it with On2's decoder software mentioned in the article.

Cool, eh?
