Gizmondo Launching In Market, Featured At CES
"Gizmondo Europe Ltd, subsidiary of Jacksonville, Florida-based Tiger Telematics Inc., today confirmed the company will be exhibiting the multi-entertainment device at the forthcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada...Gizmondo will be featured on the Microsoft Corp. stand, profiling the strengths of the Windows CE technology and onboard Windows Media Player. It will also be demonstrating the capabilities of the new GoForce 4500 3D graphics accelerator on the Nvidia stand, which lies at the gaming heart of the device."

We've posted on this before, and it's interesting to see it evolve and develop as it nears market. The unit is launching in the UK right now (the PR suggests North America and others in early 2005), so hopefully reviews hit the web soon. I'd love to see a Pocket PC designed in a form factor like this, but at least this might establish a foothold for CE gaming. Anyone know how the 3D accelerator in this device performs?
Update: Courtesy of engadget, here's a bunch of screenshots of the Gizmondo, with some "live". 8)

Well it is cool to see this device. I really think that over the past few years the developement of games on the PDA platform has started to go down. Yes there are still many great games out there, but the actual developing itself has suffered. As much as I would like to think a device like this could help reguvinate that community, I just don't see it happening. I mean its bad enough as is when you are sitting at a Doctor's office and someone asks you what kind of "gameboy" that is. This just puts that stereotype to an even higher level. And with both the Nintendo DS just released and the PSP promptly on its way, I just cannot see this (even on the CE Platform) being able to contend in anyway. The market is just not there sadly. But I do hope to wait and see what this can bring, and I do hope I am wrong.

This just goes to show that the pocket pc suffers from the whole "household name" deficiency.
Hopefully the whole "Oh you have a Palm Pilot" scenario is decreasing in frequency.

Unfortunately for me it's not... Apparently to some people, the label on the front of my X30 (Pocket PC right under the screen) means it's a Palm...
On topic: This is a step in the right direction. Hopefully we'll see some gaming devices that use Pocket PC instead of just Windows CE. Maybe there will be some with the rumored 3D acceleration that could be in WM2005...

I must admit, the whole "Palm Pilot" thing is dying down in my experience. Many people are saying PDA and some non-technical people have actually said "Pocket PC" when reffering to all PDA's. Although that betters my cause, still inaccurate. And then the fact that "Palm Pilot's" haven't existed by that name since 3Com dropped it.

The only purpose I see for those button labels are to differentiate it from anything else on the market. I think maby something better could have been come up with, but eh, I'm not a console designer... so I cannot judge em.
