Socket OrganizeIT Suite: Catalog your CDs and DVDs
"The Socket OrganizeIT Suite is an industry first offering a complete solution to manage a library of music and video using the Socket SDIO In-Hand Scan Card (ISC) with your favorite mobile device. Socket OrganizeIT Suite software features three applications with an easy to use interface. The software application in conjunction with the SDIO ISC scans UPC bar codes and retrieves valuable data on the web to complete a comprehensive database of music and video. Information can be synchronized between Pocket PC and Palm OS mobile devices and the desktop PC for easy management. Wireless capable mobile devices can upload data in real-time."
At $299 USD, this isn't for the mere hobbyist, but if you're serious about cataloguing your CDs and DVDs, this is a killer solution. The kit includes an SD-based bar code scanner, and the client software that will take those bar codes and look them up online to build your catalogue. I wonder what the interface is like? Scanning the bar codes is the easy part for a company like Socket Communications - creating fast, powerful, and easy to use software is the hard part. It's not available yet - you can pre-order it from Mobile Planet and it's expected to ship December 30th. [Affiliate]

If I had my stuff catalogued, I'd probably use ListPro to do it. It'd require a ton of data entry, but it's so flexible.

Anyone remember a few years ago, when the "CAT" came out? It was going to revolutionize the way you read magazines. I remember PARADE magazine pushed it heavily; there were barcodes at the end of articles that you could swipe and it would take you to a website with more information. I guess they figured people wouldn't bother typing in URLs. Anyway, these scanners were given away either free or for a pittance. And very soon hacks started appearing which would allow people to use them to scan books, CDs, and movies to create their own databases. It was a serial device, but it worked quite well. I think I tossed mine ages ago.

I use Ant Movie Catalog (FREE): http://www.antp.be/software/moviecatalog
I simply add all the titles of the movies on the PC, let the Internet Movie Database update with synopsis, ratings, etc. and then export to an HTML file that includes a thumbnail of the movie cover that can be imported and viewed easily on a PPC.

Funny you mentioned this! I have a cuecat on my Christmas list! I have been waiting for a solution like this but I think $300 is ridiculous. You could get a cuecat for $5-$10 and this software which works with listpro

Not an industry first...
Delicious library has been out for a while on the Mac. I use my iSight to scan the barcodes of books, dvd's, cd's, ps2 games. The Amazon database is used by the software.
What I like is that I can scan items as I lend them out, so I know who has them.
Tres handy for us Mac folks.

Have you guys checked out DVDProfiler? I've been using that for quite some time. Even wrote a nice little SprintDB database so I export a CSV to my PPC and with a click of a button it imports all my movies, puts them in a nice list format and gives me a count of how many DVDs I have. It even captures most of the detailed information that I want (no cover art though).

One gets what one pays for I guess, especially considering Sockets SDIO In-Hand Scan card retails for $219.95 at Mobile Planet without the OrganizeIT software that comes w/ this offering.

Cuecat? Is Digital Convergence still around? Isin't that the scanning device that was lambasted back in 2000 by privacy groups? When the user activated the cat ( the scanner was locked until the user gave either Radio Shack or Digital Convergence their name, address and email address ) its software followed all your internet tracks, and unlike a cookie, there was no way to delete or disable it?
That was long ago, so maybe I'm wrong.
I did do a quick read of the Digital Covergence 10/2000 SEC S/1 filing, and this is a warning that comes in the filing...
OUR RIGHT TO KEEP INFORMATION COLLECTED IN OUR DATABASES MAY BE CHALLENGED IN THE FUTURE.
We intend to use our :C.R.Q. and :Cue:C.A.T. technology to develop and maintain a substantial database of consumer demographic information that our customers can use with our permission to conduct advertising campaigns. In particular, we intend to require each user of our technology to provide basic individual information in order to register and activate our :C.R.Q. software application. Under our privacy policy, individual user information will not be made available to outside parties and will be used internally by us only if a user gives express permission for such use. Some summary demographic data, however, may be made available to outside parties. Privacy concerns may cause users to resist providing the personal data necessary to support this profiling capability. More importantly, even the perception of security and privacy concerns, whether or not valid, may inhibit Internet user acceptance of our technology and products. Furthermore, users may bring lawsuits against us seeking to prohibit us from collecting this data. Even if without merit, lawsuits could impair Internet user acceptance of our technology and products. In addition, legal requirements may heighten these concerns if businesses must notify Internet users that the data captured after visiting certain websites may be used by marketing entities to direct product promotion and advertising to that user. We are not aware of any such laws currently in effect in the United States. Other countries and political entities, such as the European Economic Community, have adopted these types of laws. We cannot predict how the international roll-out of our technology will be affected by these types of laws.

That software looks AWESOME...too bad I don't have a Mac. Sometimes I wish developers on the Windows platform were more creative, and more adept at clean, functional user-interfaces.
