Default Setting a "Trend" - Free Mobile Security From Trend Micro

http://www.infoworld.com/article/04...giveaway_1.html

"The company plans to introduce Trend Micro (Profile, Products, Articles) Mobile Security Version 1.0 on Monday, and will allow so-called "smart phone" users to download and use the software for free until June 2005. The product contains protections against mobile threats like the recent Skulls Trojan and Cabir worm, as well as filtering for SMS (Short Message Service) spam, according to a statement. Trend Micro will also release a version of the software for mobile phones and PDAs (personal digital assistants) running Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC-Phone Edition in January."

Last week, I posted on the Trend Micro Mobile Security Beta Program. Continuing on from this, Trend Micro have decided to offer their Mobile Security package for free. It is compatible with both Smartphones and Pocket PCs. However, a supported Pocket PC version will not be seen until January 2005. Trend Micro hope that a mass of mobile device purchases this holiday season will trigger an influx of new consumers looking for a compatible antivirus solution. That's where they are hoping that the Mobile Security package will be the first point of call for many new (and old) mobile enthusiasts. This new release will offer real-time virus scanning, anti-spam options for SMS messages, and rapid virus updates (with support for GPRS). There is a catch to this giveaway though. The free software will expire on June 30, 2005 - which is still plenty of time to try the software. How Trend Micro plan on offering it thereafter still has to be decided, but in a world of increasing viral threats to mobile devices, Mobile Security may have its place in the market, alongside the similar offerings by well-known companies such as Symantec and Airscanner.

D'oh! No mention of support for WM2003 - only Smartphone, Phone Edition and Second Edition are mentioned.
