Default New Samsung PDA at CeBIT Germany: the Nexio XP30

http://www.bargainpda.com/?newsID=1955

"The XP30 is actually an updated version of the Nexio S160, which was announced two years ago. The XP30 has real promise to threaten the ultraportable notebook world. While not the same thing, the widescreen will allow for a reasonable web browsing experience. Built-in WiFi is a welcome addition and the USB host port for keyboard or mouse will make mobile life a lot easier. For a device of this functionality, it would have been nice to offer two expansion slots, as a number of road warriors will want to use the CF slot for Bluetooth, file storage, GPS and more; often at the same time."

A tempting device, but it will be a mass-market failure. Why? There's no developer and community ecosystem for it - it's a product that tries to be platform by itself, and ultimately that limits how successful it will be.

Default There is developer support!

There is developer support. Since this device uses the same ARMv4-compatible CPU as Windows Mobile Pocket PCs, many programs written for Pocket PCs will run unmodified on it. The ones that don't can be modified quite easily to work on both. For instance, the PocketView feature of GoToMyPC runs on both Windows Mobile for Pocket PC and various Windows CE 4.x devices, including the NEXiO S160.

Concerns are still valid for this type of devices although some applications might work. I agree with the assessment that this type of device will be a mass market failure.

It is true...you can run all Windows 2002 + 2003 + 2003 SE software on this device. The thing is that when the program is ran, it will open up in a window that is the size of 320 x 240 which is small in a Windows CE screen size of 800 x 480. Supposively, someone in S. Korea is selling one on eBay (w/an English based OS)...I talked to him and asked if he could lower the price about 50% (because he is charging more than $800) but he declined... But if you check out the specifications of the device, this device sounds like it rocks. With all its features in a device that is only 0.53" thick. It has 128 MB RAM, USB 1.1 port, 5" screen, Windows CE 4.1, about 6.2" tall and 3.5 wide (I think), CF 2 slot, port for a PCMCIA adapter, 400 MHz CPU, 1500 Mah battery, etc.

Gee I guess you can kind of say the same thing about.....

The Mac
The iPod

Anything else?

The Nexio is not new. This is just a new version.

Question for Microsoft....when ya gunna ditch the Media Player thing and take the same tech, and a touch screen and give me a PDA with a 100 GB HD!
