Surfs, Shoots and Leaves
After the yarn of the yak header and the Wifi network, here's another touching tale of technology's ability to make the world a slightly better place:
"The world's dwindling panda population is getting a helping hand from a wireless internet network. The Wolong Nature Reserve in the Sichuan Province of southwest China is home to 20% of the remaining 1,500 giant pandas in the world. A broadband and wireless network installed on the reserve has allowed staff to chronicle the pandas' daily activities.....It includes a 802.11b wireless network and a video monitoring system using five cameras to observe pandas around the clock. Before the new infrastructure arrived at the panda park, staff walked or drove to deliver floppy disks across the reserve."
Everyone say "aaaaw, cute".  Just love those Pandas. Apart from this and hooking your Pocket PC up to wireless networks, what's the best use of Wifi that you've heard about?

Modern Medicine
Probably the biggest impact right now would be to the medical community. Doctors are able to access current patient information and check diagnoses bedside instead of referring to dated and possibly inaccurate charts.
Having just endured rotator cuff surgery, it made me very nervous when every person I came into contact with asked me which shoulder they were supposed to be working on. Even after they marked it with indelible ink!

Actually, there is widespread PDA and Wi-Fi use in many hospitals worldwide. You just need to be in the right place at the right time to see it in action. I'm sure, with time, the use of this will grow, but it definitely won't be an "overnight" change.

The title of your post reminds me of a joke.

Good, good. I was trying to be subtle about it.  I do try to make the titles interesting. :mrgreen:

Here in the UK there is a big push to computerise the NHS (National Health Service) and I believe that Wifi will play a big part in it. I just read on the train that someone's come up with the ability to work out location from Wifi signals. The specific use mentioned was in hositals, i.e. to be able to locate doctors, nurses, wheelchairs etc would be very usefull. I usually mentally tag such stories to post on them later, but can't remember where I saw it.  ops: I'll try to locate it.
