Default TomeRaider 3 Released

http://www.tomeraider.com/index.html

"TomeRaider 3 is the newest incarnation, a total rewrite that has been 2 years in the making. Check out these new features:"

HTML Support: TR3 now supports HTML verbatim, making it even easier to make TR3 files.
Image support: Now images from the small to the massive can be displayed in TR3 files. Its about time.
The Filter Builder: Never before possible filters and queries can now be constructed by anyone.
Search Acceleration: Searching even tens of megabytes is now faster than you thought was possible.
Super Compression: TR2 was good, TR3 is even better. The files are smaller and they work faster.

TomeRaider is a database application wrapped in a document reader and built for speed. I used an older version of this program a few years ago, and while it was kinda neat, I never used it much, and finally uninstalled it. I recall fast searches but a rather clunky interface. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw when I installed the new version last night - the UI is clean and compact, ClearType is supported, and searches are blazin' fast.

The price is listed at $22.50, and there's a trial available that lets you read a few pages/perform a few searches before you get a nag screen and have to exit. Oh, and none of the old TomeRaider files will work with the new version - you'll have to download a trial of the Windows version and convert them one by one. Any TomeRaider users out there? Thoughts?

I used this for a month or two waaaaay back, but I couldnt find that many things to read with it, and it just ended up being an annoyance since I never acutally bought it, since I couldnt read a lot of pages (that doesnt really help if you ahve a dictionary with TomeRaider)

But it's a great program, I realyl enjoyed its features.

I use TomeRaider for accesing the IMDB and WikiPedia databases I have on my 1GB SD card. I love the Wikipedia one - the file is about 400MB, but it's got text (no images, though that could change now with TR3) of all the entries, all hyperlinked (close to 1 million). I love walking around knowing I have an entire encyclopedia in my pocket!

Any word about upgrade pricing for TR2 owners?

Actually Tomeraider has always been one of first programs installed on any of my IPAQs, primarily because of the super-fast reference search abilities. I currently have Wikepedia installed - the version I have is almost 200M, but where else can you find a reference for PocketPC that will link from an overview of Pink Floyd to a biography of Syd Barrett, all self contained? Check out www.memoware.com for a lot of free material.

Having said this, I would normally be the first to continue buying, just to support this highly useful product, BUT probably won't until I better understand the impact of the format changes.

Tomeraider rules.

I can't wait to see an updated Wikipedia with images (or html at the very least) . I don't care if it's 1 gb. It is by far the best resource you can have on your Pocket PC in my opinion.

The one that they export and make available for download is only about 180MB. Last time I went to get that, it wasn't available, so I followed the steps to manually create my own - took the latest database dump snapshot, ran some Perl scripts on it to clean it up, remove images, reformat links, etc., then used the desktop version of TR to convert/import it.

The whole process took about 5 hours of compute time, but in the end, I had a more robust and up-to-date 390MB Wikipedia than the one that's available for download.

You can find the instructions for making your own from the daily database dump snapshots on the same page you download the 180MB version from. It's a bit of work, but worth it IMO.
