Default 3G CDMA 1xEV-DO For Your iPAQ... in Japan

http://akiba.sorobangeeks.com/news_8748.html

Want to get high speed (circa 2.4Mbps) wireless access without a hotspot on your Pocket PC? You can get it -- via a CompactFlash CDMA 1xEV-DO card -- but get ready to pack your bags for Japan.

Has it become cliche to say "I'm really, really envious"? :P

In all fairness to US carriers, Japan is a different ballgame (with South Korea very close behind). I'm sure many Europeans would also drool over the prospects of 2.4Mbps service.

A big difference is that the government gave the GPRS/3G licences for free and instead of paying billions in licence fees, the carriers pourred the money into the networks.

The result? We have a sluggish 40kbps to 200kbps, they have 2.4Mbps

Would everyone stop bitching about how great 3G is in Japan? We have it *here*, *now*. No, it's not everywhere, but it will be soon. VZW plans to have their entire network covered with 1xEV-DO by the end of 2005.

First of all, we already have 1xEV-DO (see my above post), and second of all, 1xEV-DO is *not* 2.4Mbps. Typical speeds are 400-800kbps. Respectable, still, but not 2.4Mbps.

The US isn't "way behind" in 3G, nor is it the FCC's fault. The problem is that the market for 3G is currently limited. Not to mention that the license fees for spectrum in the US are a *drop in the bucket* compared to the cost of deploying 3G equipment.

I just wish Sprint would release something like that. And let me use my current unlimited data plan to use it!

Okay, I know, I know, but I can dream...

Not quite. I've been watching BroadbandAccess very carefully.

1. Have you actually looked at the coverage maps? They're strictly urban. 20 miles outside of NYC, there is no BroadbandAccess.

2. At $79.95/month, it's not exactly a decent price.

3. The only way you can get 1xEV-DO right now is via a PC card. Not going to work in an iPAQ 2215, now is it? Not via Bluetooth, not via CF, not via anything. Verizon's notorious for being extremely slow about releasing new devices.

4. The article said 2.4Mbps, and I indeed found that suspicious for 1xEV-DO as well. Maybe they're deploying 1xEV-DV.

I'm not complaining per se, I'm just envious of what they have now.
