Default MPx On Sale... Sort Of

http://www.celluloco.com/products/c...59&cat=0&page=1

Want a Motorola MPx? Now you can get one from the guys at Celluloco.com.

There's one caveat: the unit costs a cool $4,448. 8O I also don't know if it's a prototype or the final hardware, so unless you've got cash to burn, it might be worth waiting a little.

Awkwardly bulky/thick cellphone. Awkwardly small and funky thumbboard. A QVGA screen offering less than 2/3rds the viewing area of even the more compact Pocket PCs such as iPAQ 1945, making web browsing a royal pain and serious document editing/viewing unlikely. Hm, yeah, that sounds worth almost USD$5000. not.

Dat's fo sho. A total waste of money - and for an engineering sample.

I've had this phone on pre-order through Expansys for months now and I just received an email from them saying that Motorola had just told them that the MPx won't be available until January 2005.

So if you want the finished model, you'll have to wait til then to get it.

No it's not! The MPx is a fantastic, beautiful device with every feature you could want - more feature rich than anything out there - and with a powerful battery. No handheld device is worth more than $1000, but when people are finally sporting these things, everyone else is going to realize how their handhelds fall short.

Some people will disagree with this, but it ultimately boils down to what you want a handheld to do, and what your needs are. Some people will buy a handheld because of a larger VGA screen. For me, I want a convergence device that does it all. And this is as close as anyone's going to get to that.

Well I've pretty much decided not to wait around anymore for this one, think the QTEK 9090 might be it (Blue Angel) or even a Treo 650, though I would miss wifi on that one.

Yeah I know. Just being snarky, sorry. For me, just me, a larger screen is simply essential. I don't often use a PC. Perhaps for an hour the odd week, but usually not even half an hour. So my PPC has to have at least a 3.5" screen to be at all useful. I find my current main machine, a Dell X5, to be rather too cramped for editing images, documents, and for web browsing. A minimum 4" screen would be vastly preferable, and the e830 and hx4700 are both looking good in that department. Throw a Convergentech GSM/GPRS CF card into either of those, along with a double-capacity battery and a small folding keyboard, and I"m a happy user. A 5" VGA screen would have me even happier, especially for use with Pocket Artist, but I realise that the potential market for such a screen is, at the moment, rather small. Maybe in a couple of years that'll change as more and more users realise that a pocket-size device can cover almost all computing needs.

Meanwhile, for those who don't often stray far from a notebook or desktop and don't mind using those nasty things, the mpx looks like a fine solution.

How about a Sigmarion3 then?

It does everything you want, clamshell device running on a 400MHz XScale 255 processor and WinCE.net 4.1(compatible with lots of PPC programs out of the box or with some modifications) and has a 5.1 inch wvga screen(800by480)

$4,500! A reasonable price, I think, would be like $800-$900. They'll learn their lesson when there are about 20 sold in one quarter!
