HP iPAQ hx4700 FCC Docs Up
Several people wrote in to let us know that the FCC site for the hx4700 is now chock-full of the usual documentation, including photos and a user manual for the device. If you've been interested in checking out the fine details, now's your chance.
It's possible it won't stay up for long, though, since there's a cover letter from HTC that requested confidentiality until September 20. (I guess it's also equally possible that the FCC denied that request.)

Man! Who told them that case design is good-looking? I think this new line of devices looks like something out of the 1970s. Ugh!

I don't like most of the new iPAQ designs, but I disagree on the 4700 -- I think it looks sleek and professional.

It would appear the FCC is releasing some of these documents in error. The manual, photos, etc. show a document release date of 9/25/04, but if you click on the link to download, there they are 8O .
It's also amazing how long this thing has been floating around without being released. Many of the photos have a sticker that says "with New Touch pad and antenna 4/26". That was almost 4 months ago. Yet the device STILL isn't shipping. The picture of the cradle is dated 5/6/04 - It seems HP has been sitting on these babies for a while.
My favorite line from the manual - discussing HP's "Protect Tools Software", which appears to password protect and encrypt your information -
"CAUTION: HP ProtectTools provides strong protection of your Pocket
PC and the data stored on it. ..., loss of all data on your iPAQ Pocket
PC, including data stored in iPAQ File Store. It is recommended that
you remember your PIN/password and question/answer." Well, duh..

I don't think the pictures do the unit justice as I was of the same opinion. However, getting to play with it a bit at the HP Wireless and Mobility seminar last week I liked what I saw. If I hadn't just bought my 5555 back in January I'd be tempted to go with this unit. I'm also torn between this and moving over to the 6315 and consolidating my devices into one unit. I just can't make up my mind yet as having the phone is nice, but not sure if it's worth the sacrifice in memory, battery time etc. According to the T-mobile reps at the event who've been using the 6315's day-to-day for awhile now, overall they like it, but they say realistically with moderate PDA use and limited WiFi use (The biggest battery drain) they get about a day out of a charge.
I will admit I was surprised at how well I could manage the unit with the touchpad. That was another concern of mine because of my BIG hands. I was afraid it would be to clumsy.

Somethig worthwhile noting which was mentioned in bh forums.
Internal pictures of the device show an ATI 3220 controller.
Also the user manual says that you can hold the calendar button for 2 seconds to toggle between portrait and landscape mode. Also in a similar fassion the Contacts button has been pre-programmed to switch
between Cursor and Navigation mode(for the touchpad).

Did anyone happen to download the users manual, because the file is no longer there for download and I would love to read it?
If you did get it can you send it to me?

In other words they've simply preset what any user can set for themselves. Dual use of the buttons in this way, and using one to switch modes, is easily set in the buttons settings.

The file's still there. I was just able to pull it up and view it. It does require you have Adobe Acrobrat Reader installed to see it.

Actually, I think that function has only been available with third party software normally. Neither my 2215 or X30 have that option, unless I'm totally missing it in the button setting dialog.
