iPAQ rz1715 Spotted at Sams Club for $258 USD
An anonymous Pocket PC Thoughts reader spotted the new rz1715 iPAQ Pocket PC on the Sams Club Web site. Here are the highlights:
" Operating system: Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 software for Pocket PC ProfessionalPocket versions of Microsoft software are included (Outlook, Word, Excel and Internet Explorer for Pocket PC) Processor: 203 MHz Samsung 2410 processor Display: 3.5 (89mm) Transflective type QVGA TFT, Portrait and Landscape modes Memory: Up to 25MB user available memory, including 10MB iPAQ File Store Interfaces: IrDa Supported (Serial IR), USB Supported via cable interface, Serial Supported, Sync / Data Connector Full RS 232 support Power: Internal Rechargeable 950 mAh Lithium-lon battery; estimated usage time of fully charged battery is up to 7 hours; charging time up to 4 hours; AC Power -- AC Input: 100~240 Vac, 50/60 Hz Expansion: SD Slot Support 4-bit SDIO and 4-bit SD/MMC type memory standard. Dimensions: 4.48 x 2.75 x 0.53 Weight: 4.23 oz."
On the surface, this looks like the guts from an iPAQ 1935 shoved into the shell of a 4700. No stunning high-end features, but a decent price point - though the Dell Axim X30 is less expensive and seems to offer a bit more.
UPDATE: Looks like Sams Club has the wrong photo. Image above courtesy of Bargain PDA.

I really suspect Sams is using the wrong picture for the iPAQ, though -- I think every unit except for the 4700 are using dpads.

yeah. that is a pic of the 4700. The new units are growing ever nearer.
CDW told me that they will be recieving the rx3400 and rx3700 on friday, the 23rd. They were supposed to be recieving 800 ipaq rx3400's yesterday, but the shipment was delayed untill friday.

That seems like a lousy price to me when you can get a dual wireless Axim for the same price or a High X30 for only $50 to $100 more, and currently for about the same price with coupons I saw on Techbargains.com. HP needs to price their units more competitively.

Did HP suddenly forget how to: a) make cool looking PPC's and b) market cool PPC's at reasonable prices?

With all the hype surrounding the latest generation of iPAQ devices, I really expected something with a bit more bite. The specifications of this unit are nothing exciting.

I don't see the point to this model. It really shows no progress whatsoever aside from the updated OS. They should have just installed WM2003SE on a 1935. With these features it should cost half as much to compete. Heck, at least the Zires have cameras.
