XCPUScalar 2.80 released
We recently posted about the Pocketnow review of XCPUScalar over/under-clocking software and in that thread, Buckyg pointed out that XCPUScalar version 2.80 has just been released. The changes include:
- Support from 100 to 741MHz, WM2003 SE and PXA270 processor support:
XCPUScalar now has support for all popular frequencies from 100 to 741MHz. PXA250 XScale processors can be scaled upto 500MHz, PXA255, PXA261, PXA262 or PXA263 XScale processors up to 530MHz at 265MHz bus speed, and PXA270 processors up to 741MHz. XCPUScalar automatically detects your PDA and applies the best clock speed, bus speed, and memory speed ratios for your PDA for optimum performance.
- Change Colors of CPU Meter to match your Today Screen Colors
Change foreground and background colors of CPU Meter to match Today Screen or task managers that XCPUScalar integrates with, like WisBar Advance, GigaBar or ICBar.
- Total control of the Auto Scale settings.
Take total control of the scale settings at a finer level, its fully configurable now in 5% increments.
- 3D Icons
Added new 3D icons for a fresher look and feel.
- Ability to add Power Off and Soft Reset Icons to Today Screen
XCPUScalar allows you to install a Power Off and Soft Reset icons on the Today Screen for one click Power Off / Soft Reset.
- Auto Start on Soft Resets
XCPUScalar now allows you to Auto Start after a Soft Reset through a menu option. No longer are you required to put a shortcut in the Startup folder manually.
- More Pocket PC's supported.
- Enhanced Anti Flicker Screen Filter
Well I downloaded the update and it's working fine for me the interface refresh looks good. Personally I just like the CPU meter doing it's thing at the top of the screen while my Axim X5 runs from 100 to 500Mhz. You can get XCPUScalar Version 2.80 from PocketGear or Handago. [Affiliates]

Is this like the Win2k/XP CPU meter that dynamically indicates processor usage? If so, does it indicate 100% when the unit exhibits one of its mysterious hangs?

Installed it on my iPAQ 5555. Nice!
Programs that are resident in RAM and don't need access to the SD card are a definitely improved. Performance is very snappy. I tested 477MHz and it was a very good improvement. Going from 477MHz to 530Mhz wasn't as dramatic an improvement. I'm very happy with the performance.
I have a fairly large Trans/ACT! database on the 512MB SD card and it doesn't seem to help much in loading the file into memory. Once the data is loaded, performance seems to be improved. I would say about 15% performance increase.
Going from 400MHz to 477MHz REALLY improved Pocket TV playback of large files. Regardless if the file was located on the SD card. Going to 530MHz helped a little. When switching to/from full screen, the higher speed helped the transition. It was instantaneous and was handled with no sweat. I noticed though that big image changes in the video was noticeable, though I attribute this to the display subsystem not keeping up.
Now this has REALLY wet my appetite for the hx4700. ANOTHER 100Mhz, VGA and probably a faster bus & video subsystem. One word: WOW!

Yes - exacty, it updates once a second or so. It's one of the reasons I really like it.
