Default MSN Launches New Search Site

http://news.com.com/MSN+launches+re...ubj=news.1032.5

"Microsoft is expected to take its first baby steps on the road to Web search independence on Thursday, with the launch of a homegrown Internet search tool and changes to its Internet search engine. The revamped MSN Search remains a front end for technology provided by Yahoo, offering mainly a facelift aimed to make it look more like Google. The relatively minor changes signal that--after a year in development and $100 million investment--Microsoft's ballyhooed search push still has a long way to go."

Check it out and let us know what you think - Pocket PC Thoughts is the #2 ranked site (once you get past the paid results), so in my books they're off to a good start.

Said it yourself: #2 after paid results. One big reason why they won't succeed.

Don't speak so quickly... a Google search has sponsored links at the top, too.

Looks like Microsoft's coming close to firing their first real shot at Google. This is going to be interesting to watch. 8) I'm going to stick with Google for now, though, since I'm very happy with it.

Same here: I'm going to stick to Google, since it has solved the problems I was dealing with by enabling me to search both the web and the usenet groups for solutions. Even when some, with sound advice, alas choose to not have their contributions to the Usenet archived. Sigh.

Send a message via MSN to manywhere

When searching for "Pocket PC", PPCT is fourth in the results (sponsored ads excluded)... what searchterms did you use to get PPCT as second? :?

Nice seeing that searching for "Filip Norrgrd" puts my homepage in first place, but "Filip Norrgard" returns my homepage as second.

And, best of all: searches for "Linux" don't appear censored anymore! Way to go MSN!

I like this new MSN search a lot better. Less clutter, less junk.

If you search for "best search engine", strangely enough MSN is first, and google second. If you search for it on google, MSN is not even on the first page, and google is the second link. This indicated a certain hubris at Microsoft (or a willingness to bend the rules of their index) and certainly some modesty at google

I think I will stick to google. I find the results page on msn much too cluttered.

Well, I'm using one of the PowerToys for XP... Tweak UI and I can enter a prefix and the itme I want to search...

Now I only enter [msn pocket pc] and it searches for it.

I also have it set for google so I only type [google pocket pc] and off it goes...

either way, I now have two search engines I can rely on.

I knew about those, but #2 after sponsored sounds like there were sponsored ads inside the search results, instead of being separated from the rest. Tried it myself, was somewhat confused at what it was talking about, since I saw PPCT was #4, but also saw those ads at the top.
