GPSPassion review Intellinav 2.0
Intellinav is a well regarded piece of GPS navigation software, which also goes under the name Guidance by iNav, Routis by Deluo and also PrymeNav by Pryme Advance. Intellinav itself has just been upgraded from version 1.1 to 2.0 and the lads over at GPSPassion have put together a nicely detailed review on their site, with plenty of screenshots. The review compares the different versions and examines all the new features:
"The most important features of a GPS navigation software are, without a doubt, its routing and guidance capabilities. intelliNav is known for generating some of the best quality routes of all the portable GPS navigation software available. The improved road-width presentation and new color-coding scheme makes following the navigation directions even more effortless. A new bell tone unobtrusively precedes every turn to remind the driver of such events, which is a nice complement to the voice announcement."
All in all, they really like the software and the review is defiantly worth a look if you're thinking of adding some GPS mapping software to your mobile armoury.

What link is that Boxster S? I was sent this eleven days ago and it slipped through the cracks till now. If you had sent it to us a month ago it would have been posted about two weeks ago. :wink: We receive the majority of our posting items from readers. Sometimes we don't have time to post about them straight away and sometimes we concentrate on more time-critical posts.
Bottom line, we very much appreciate interesting topical items that are sent into the news at PocketPCThoughts dot com address, and we try to post on them whenever possible. In this case, I was slow to post. Better late than never eh. :wink:

which gps software is best? confused :?:
I am not sure if this is the right place to post this question. I tried to find a specific thread on this subject but didn't see it.
I am trying to figure out what GPS Software to use. I read all the above and more elsewhere and I still don't know what is best to do. Any help would be much appreciated.
Here's my current state of affairs:
I recently switched back from Treo600 to a TMobile PPCPE with 2003 upgrade and the 128 upgrade. (Actually, the comparision is pretty interesting- basically I love the camera + keyboard, but hate the OS).
In any event, I have the Pharos hardware, and I understand it will work with any software.
I originally had the Ostia software, and it was horrible. I understand that there have been significant improvements since the version I had, but I never upgraded in time.
I tried Mapopolis and bought the full map program awhile ago, but it expired and the old maps don't seem to work with the new software version, and I don't have most of the maps anyway. I even bought the online update information service when I was in Chicago, but it was almost ALWAYS wrong, but cool nonetheless.
So, I am pretty much at square one on the software.
My needs are as follows:
-I don't travel all the much. It is amazing here in Sun Valley, Idaho. But I am following the Dead from Boise, Portland, Seattle and then back to Sun Valley. We want to get where we are going without getting lost. So, aside from this trip, and perhaps a couple others in a particular locaction (vs. a three state trip), I don't expect to need to download maps that often.
-I expect it would take about an hour or so to download all the maps from Mapopolis. Could I just do "demo" maps if I don't intend to need them more than the trial period?
-I don't mind the Mapopolis interface, but would prefer a 3d visual effect.
-I want to make sure whatever software I get is going to be compatible with future bluetooth model that I would someday like to get.
I think that pretty much summarizes my concerns and current state of affairs, with a bit of history for rambling sake.
Any help would be much appreciated. Also, let me know if you will be at any of those Dead Shows.

What I meant is that I think I saw the link for the review right here on PocketPC Thoughts. This and Brighthand are the only sites I go to for PPC news and I know that I didn't see it at Brighthand.

Now that you mention it, I recall that, too. In fact, with a little search, I found the "GpsPasSion Previews Intellinav v2" thread. However, that was a preview, not a review.
It's interesting the GPS Passion is in France, but the map shown in the story is near me (Cupertino, California -- Stevens Creek/Lawrence Expressway/I-280).
UPDATE: Apparently the reviewer lives in the San Francsisco Bay Area.

I also have the Pharos hardware and ditched the Ostia after the first two uses (prime reason: the map for my area didn't even have the street I live on... and that street has been here for at least three years). I searched for options... my husband has the Mio with the integrated GPS and the software included with that was pretty good, but too pricey for me (I think it is called Destinator or something like that; the software was over $200). So I asked on this forum myself and got the link to Mapopolis. I tell you, I love it and use it daily. Downloading the maps isn't that big a deal; I also don't travel much but recently drove from Maryland to Toronto and got all the maps I needed in just about ten minutes or less, and that included looking up which counties I would need.
(That's about the only peeve I have with the way the Mapopolis map selector works: it's all text-based, rather than being able to choose on a map. I'd love to see a graphic representation of the states, with the major highways overlaid on it, so you could pick all the counties that are, say, along the I-95 corridor from Maryland to Connecticut.)
My husband's system does the 3-D view, and while it's pretty nifty, after a while I found it pretty distracting. He started joking that you could probably steer your car by looking at the GPS display... what a scary thought!! The Mapopolis display works fine for me. And the text-to-speech feature that announces the road name works extremely well... the only real mispronounciation I've found is that it says "gay-org" for "george" -- perhaps the speechbot has Austrian roots?
As for mounting, I had tried an Arkon cupholder mount, but after a few months the doohicky that goes into the cup holder lost its ability to grip the sides of the cupholder well and it got tossed. Now I use a windshield mount that I bought along with the Pharos; it uses velcro to hold the unit in place. I like this as I also use a PC case that holds the unit with velcro.
Good luck in your search; the only consolation is that GPS software packages seem to be going down so that you won't be out a bundle in trying a new one.

I have to concur with Welmoed on Mapopolis, but will go one further and say it is hands down the best mapping software, bar none. Sure it is not as fancy looking as others, but it is super fast, super reliable, and very easy to use. The developers are constantly improving it and the latest version is the fastest ever. I think the voice prompts took as step back, with the introduction of the computer voice, but everything else just keeps getting better. I tried just about everything else out there, but always come back to Mapopolis. Fancy graphics is nice, but not at the expense of reliability, speed, and usability.

Ah - fair enough.  Thanks for finding the link Steve.
I'm always interested to see reviews of new GPS software and to see how the technology is coming along. I look forward to getting GPS hardware. I wonder when it will be standard equipement in PPCs? :wink:
