Default Movie Guide For The Serious Buff

http://www.landware.com/movieguide/ppc/

I don't usually like to post about software that's not available yet, mostly because I don't want to be part of spreading rumors about vaporware. In this case, though, here's something that a lot of you might be waiting for: the Leonard Maltin Movie Guide For Pocket PC.

"Think of all the time you have spent watching films that haven't lived up to the studio hype. Now with a few taps of the stylus you can find the gems and side step the turkeys. The Leonard Maltin Movie Guide places essential facts for over 19,600 films at your fingertips including ratings and capsule reviews summarizing plot quality and often great tidbits of information."

Other key features include:

Complete details and capsule reviews of over 19,600 films
More than 6,500 DVD, 7,000 Laserdisc and 14,000 Videocassette entries
Easy-to-read symbols detailing MPAA rating, WideScreen formats, awards etc.
Filmographies for over 35,000 Actors, Actresses and Directors
Top lists of popular movies as voted by over 100,000 regular movie-goers
Complete film library, rental and buying list management
Online event calendar keeps you in touch with DVD release dates, new releases in theatres and film festivals
Full support for removable expansion card media

Unfortunately, the Web site gives absolutely no indication of when the movie guide, which is "still in production," will be available. However, if you'd like to get an e-mail notification when it is ready, all you have to do is sign up here.

About bloody time. I have the same guide on my Palm, and it's pretty good - except for the fact that you can't even update the damn thing really. It has a pretty good selection, and it's very easy to use, even in a crowded video store. Unfortunately, since I can't update it, it's not much use for anything that came out this year, and you have to manually add every new movie...And when that's all said and done, you can't even export your collection. So ultimately, I've chosen to go with a PC based program.

I hope this makes full use of the PPC's abilitys; so that we can download an update ourselves. Oh and, while they're at it, please add movie posters as well.

But did you know that Leonard Maltin gave 2 stars to "Laserblast"?
He gave the same 2 stars to "My Dinner With Andre". According to this, "A Fish Called Wanda" was as good a film as "Laserblast"...

I used to use Videohound on my Palm Tungsten|E, so now I'm looking for a new app for my new X30 when it arrives.

Hopefully they won't take as long as with Pocket Quicken.

Seriously, something like this would be cool, but without the ability to update the database, it will only be useful for movies released before the software was. Yes, there are a lot of movies like that, but do people tend to rent older movies or recently released ones?

I use Tomeraider with the Internet Movie Database (IMDB).
Tomeraider is commercial but all of the encyclopedias, novels and databases are free (www.memoware.com).

The IMDB is great because it contains trivia about most of the films, and the rating is weighted by hundreds (sometimes thousands) of users.

Mind you, my DB doesn't seem to have "Laserblast" in it, only the sequel

It used to be that you could download the IMDB database for PDAs from the IMDB Web site, but I can't seem to find that any more. If I recall correctly, they had it broken down into sections (maybe by decade) because it was so large.

If it's still available at IMDB, please post the link. :-)

I've never downloaded if from imdb.com, I've always used memoware. There are quite a few versions available in order to save file size.Personally I use Internet Movie Database IMDB 1960-Present Detailed which is about 16Mb I think.

Good as it is though, it still can't compare with the main IMDB site with the user reviews and memorable quotes etc. Does imdb.com have a mobile friendly site? I've looked before but not found one.
