Default PPCT... It's Not Just A Name, It's An Acronym!

http://www.acronymfinder.com/af-que...ct&Acronym=ppct

PPCT member ryaninc spotted the fact that not only is PPCT an abbreviation that we use here, but it's also now an acronym listed at AcronymFinder.com. What's next? W?BIC! making it into the dictionary?

Default Why not?

I just took the three minutes to submit W?BIC! to the acronym website. Let's see if they accept it in a few days...

not to be the bearer of bad news... PPCT is a register trade mark. The company teaches defensive tactics to police, they also have a reputation of sueing people for anything close to infringment.

I'm glad you referred to "PPCT" as an abbreviation, not an acronym (well, except in the Subject :-)). An acronym has to resemble a word (something that can be pronounced as a word).

Steve

P.S. That AcronymFinder.com link is broken (it needs the "http://").

Merriam Webster disagrees.

Yeah, I thought this was so cool that I had to share it with you guys. I use AcronymFinder all the time. They have an amazing database and it really comes in handy. (I even tried checking it wirelessly under the table while playing Balderdash, but I got caught. :wink

But the other day I thought I'd try looking for PPCT. And there it was! Very cool.

And look how excited we're all getting! This is such a great community!

Yes, but American Heritage agrees with me.

Quote:
acronym ( P ) Pronunciation Key (kr-nm)
n.

A word formed from the initial letters of a name, such as WAC for Women's Army Corps, or by combining initial letters or parts of a series of words, such as radar for radio detecting and ranging.

[acr(o)- + -onym.]acronymic or acronymous (-krn-ms) adj.

Notice that Merriam-Webster said it was also an abbreviation; they didn't give a #2 definition. That generally implies that it's a less acceptable definition.

It's possible that so many people misused "acronym" that it is taking on the additional meaning through common usage. Perhaps Merriam-Webster acknowledges that, while American Heritage prefers to keep the original meaning.
