Even MORE iPAQ 6300 News Yet Again for the Nth Time
But hark! There's some new information this time around! Mauricio Freitas of Geekzone recently attended the Convergence 2004 Wellington exhibition, and he brought back some tasty goodies for all of us: "I think the highlight was the HP presentation. The topic was "Smart Wireless Devices". One of the slides shown had a series of concentric circles showing how different wireless technologies interact and relate to use profiles, from RFID, Bluetooth (personal networks), Wi-Fi (local networks), Wi-max (metropolitan networks) and GPRS (wide area networks). In one of the slides the presenter introduced us to the concept of a device that could span through the personal networks through GPRS. Apparently this device will be available in New Zealand from the second half of this year, and would run on Vodafone's GSM/GPRS network."
"He then proceeded to show to the audience a device, which looks very much like the image [above] which was commented about earlier in this article."
The "local market" in this case is New Zealand, but hopefully this device will be released world-wide in a similar time frame. It's nice to hear that real people are now seeing real working devices. Now we just have to wait. Have I mentioned that I hate waiting?
EDIT: Updated a small amount of text to reflect updated text in the quoted article.

I was on the hp web site Monday evening searching for a 4155 manual. In the drop-down box were listings for a 6300 and a 6340. I clicked on both but neither pulled up a manual. And both have now been removed from the iPAQ manual drop-down box.

I hate the external aerial - I really hate the external aerial :soapbox:
Okay so I know it is there to increase wifi range (it was stated somewhere in another thread that the aerial is for wifi not the phone function) but hey the Toshiba's seem to do pretty well without one. I think this is the single thing that would keep me from buying this device.

Don't get too excited
....I heard a rumour that despite the device being GSM/GPRS enabled, it is NOT a phone. Sure you can send data over the connection but I don't think this will be a Windows Mobile Phone Edition device - i.e. you can't use it to talk.
