Exchange Team Blog: "What is the Exchange ActiveSync Up-to-date Feature?"
"One of the new features in Exchange 2003 is Exchange ActiveSync. Exchange ActiveSync allows you to synchronize your Windows Mobile 2003 Device with your Exchange mailbox over a wireless network without having to cradle the device. The Up-to-date (UTD) feature notifies the device if there is a new item in the Exchange mailbox and the device will automatically initiate a synchronization with you[r] mailbox. This feature gives the user an always on and always current feeling. The other benefits of this feature are better device resource utilization, a more consistent user experience when compared to device expectancies and this operation is done in the background without the device turning itself on."
This is a good blog entry explaining how Exchange 2003-based ActiveSync supports a simple form of push-like technology so you don't need to set your connected WM2003 device to poll the server every so often. However, it still sounds a bit awkward -- the email itself doesn't get pushed, but rather an SMS is sent to tell the device to go fetch the email. Does anyone have technical details on how the RIM solution as licensed by OEMs will work on Pocket PCs?

This actually sounds like a good solution for now, I don't have a phone edition device so it won't work for me. Hopefully sprint gets something that's good soon or I'll have to goto a carrier who does. I can say that server activesync is da bomb so I can only imagine that using the auto up to date function is even better.

I have a PPC phone and a smart phone as well as using exchange, i have personaly found that just setting activesync to sync every 5 miniutes is best. i tried this allways up to date, but with the amount of items that change it was allways syncing, and draining the battery. at least with 5 min intervals, i have some control over it. and in my case 5 miniutes is not that long to wait to get an email. The other issue that i found being in the US is each time it sends a notification it counted against my SMS messages. so unless SMS's are really cheep, or you want to buy a plan with unlimited SMS it might be more expensive.

Tmobile charges $.05 for each SMS. There doesn't seem to be a flat-fee SMS plan either. I originally was using this feature, but switched to a 10 minute synchronization schedule.
If SMS were free, or flat-fee, I'd turn Auto Update back on. It's sweet.
We just finished an Exchange 2003 upgrade and are slightly nudging users looking for new PDA's towards PPC's because of Exchange Active Sync.
Unfortunately, 2 users (including the CEO (of course!)) have Treos, so we have for look at a seperate Palm synching solution as well.

Keeping Tasks up to date
I think the Up-to-date Feature is a great feature, but I still can't figure out why Server Active Sync does not allow you to sync Notes and Tasks. I update my Tasks throughout the day both from my device and through outlook. It bugs me that I have to go home to a cradle to sync tasks when I can have my contacts, calandar, and e-mail always up to date over the air. Anyone know why Microsoft left this functionality out? (other than it would allow me to take my PC out of the equation and I would not have to pay the windows tax)

It would be nice if the whole activesync experience could be moved to a server, well at least notes, tasks and files. That way people with multiple devices could have the same info across the board. I have my ppc set to sync every 30 minutes. I woukd like to shorten the time but i'm using my bluetooth phone for the connection so I have to balance it out. I didn't even think of the sms pricing here, that would really suck to have unlimited data but get nailed by sms costs

I would agree, i am on TMO as well, and $0.05 per sms is not worth it. i am using a i-mate ppc phone, but cant wait till the HP phone comes out on tmo, tmo phones just seem to work better on their network. i run into so many network connectivity issues that i dont have with other tmo phones or my blackberry. it would also be great if the new HP will include the blackberry service that some think might be included. I too dislike the fact MS didnt include tasks or notes support. I am a very heavy user of tasks, and it is a major pain to keep syncing with my computer throughout the day to have the latest notes. I am also a little disappointed in MSs email integration, mostly, I dont like the fact that when I reply to an email from my phone in outlook it doesnt note the email as being replied to, or forwarded. That sometimes can cause confusion, and it shouldnt be that hard for MS to add support for that either, blackberries do it just fine. It would also have been nice for them to include support for flags, but that is fairly minor. I spend a great deal of my day out of the office, and after using MS mobiles and blackberries I still have yet to find a solution that suites me, without carrying two handheld devices. i may have to try the new treo with Good service (like the blackberry or wireless activesync) they offer support for all services (email, contacts, calendar, tasks, and notes) but I really dislike the palm OS. I just hope it wont be to long till we see some MS mobiles with more developed services, and devices that allow for multiple means of wireless communication and input (I like the idea of having a keyboard on the device). Just my 2 cents.

I have tried this out on an XDA I running the 2003 ROM. I know there have been some ROM issues with that version on GPRS stability. However, the sync was very un-stable. There were strange things happening with the Calendar and the dates it was syncronzing. The notify immediatly was not working, and I could not find the settings to troubleshoot it. The only thing that was working as it should be was the contacts.
Has potential too many "quirky" things right now. Blackberry and a BES server is a much more stable solution.

While i can't comment about autd in exchange 2003 i can say that server sync works great and is very reliable. I'm wondering why i didn't use it sooner.
