Default PPCW.net Photos of the Motorola MPx

http://www.ppcw.net/images/live/3gsm/

Arne Hess from PPCW.net is in Cannes snapping pictures like crazy, and he has the first "real life" pictures of the MPx that I've seen:

I'm a little hesitant on that keyboard - it looks like is might take some getting used to, but I'm still giddy over the forthcoming release of this new device. Check out the rest of the photos on his site!

The 'wave' of the keyboard layout may take some getting used to but I am sure that Moto spent a good amount of time testing this with real people. I have to trust that this was a good compromise between form and function. With the function buttons at the top of the keyboard, it looks like it was designed for minimal requirement of the stylus.

I actually kind of like the "wave." This appears to be designed so that hopefully the darker section lights up with the top hinge is used so that those keypad numbers are viewable. Put me on the list for one of these. Please, please, please had EDGE availability on this...

It looks rather thick. Is that just a trick of the eye from the photo angle or from the other two dimensions being smaller than you average Pocket PC, or is it actually that much thicker than most Pocket PCs?

I wonder how durable those hinges will be. Interesting concept, but it's awfully ugly, IMO.

I am very curious about the operating system and how it can switch between portrait and landscape modes. I like having the builtin keyboard it is definitely very useful BUT This could prevent this device form being released in the Middle East and Parts of Europe. Remember that was the same issue with the iPAQ h4350. HP went the right direction to provide a clip-on keyboard for the new iPAQ h6300, which can be easily customized for different regions.

I never thought of that. It would be a good thing if the number section did light up automatically depending on the orientation. It might be that they all light up but since the number pad is a different shade then they would be easier to distinguish from the thumbpad when in profile mode.

I'm not that well versed on Cell technology so I'll ask, does this phone look like it will be compatible with the Sprint network? If not then I may just have to end my contract early and switch carriers. This phone looks more and more like the Treo 600 of Pocket PCs.

I think the reason why it looks thick is because of the hinge is bulky. What are the specs on this phone?

(Looks at thumbs... looks at keyboard... looks at thumbs again)

Uh, do you use the stylus to press the keys?

It does look quite thick, but as a clam shell unit its probably less thick than my xda2 with case. It appears to by the size of a pack of cigarettes, which we know half the worlds population carry around without any problem.

Anyways, on this picture it does not look that thick. I think we are just seeing it hinge on, which makes it look very large.

My next phone for sure (unless something better comes out).

This has been the best development so far, in that the PPC os moved into the high volume innovative cell phone area without abandoning the legacy in experience, openness and software built up over the last 5 years of ppc.

I think the keys are the size of the back AND white areas, with the white areas being available as shift. So they not really *that* small. I like it (remember the nokia 3650 ukeface: )
