Default movianVPN for Pocket PC 2003

http://www.handango.com/brainstore/...productId=93967

"movianVPN by Certicom, is an award-winning VPN client that provides secure wireless access to corporate network resources. Developed with the IPSec standard, movianVPN supports market leading VPN gateways, and is widely interoperable with networks and applications for flexible deployment options. Designed to meet the processing, bandwidth and battery constraints of a wireless device, movianVPN is simple to install, configure and use."

It's a niche product, but if you need IPsec-based VPN support, this is one of the few options available. There's a free trial on Handango, or you can purchase the software for $75 USD. [Affiliate]

Very promissing, BUT SonicWall gateways are not officially supported (although they may, or may not, work). Would be buying this in seconds IF SonicWalls were officially supported.

I've used movianVPN clients on Windows Mobile Pocket PC 2003 (h4150 via wi-fi and h3970 via GPRS), Symbian Series 60 (Nokia 3650) and Symbian UIQ (Sony Ericsson P800). All worked without a problem with our Nortel Contivity firewall box. Of course I had to find one of our boxes around the world that had a configuration that would allow this client, since some of our boxes were too tightly configured.

Default This software will cause a HARD RESET and DATA LOSS on an iPAQ 4300 series!!!

I have run into this problem twice now on my iPAQ 4350. The first time was with version 3.07, and now again with this version (3.10).

When I first got my iPAQ 4350 last month, I installed all of my applications on it, and everything was happy. The last app I installed was version 3.07 of movianVPN for 2003. It installed fine, and said it needed to soft reset for installation to complete. On soft reset, I got a black screen, like the reset wasn't successful, and the device was powered off. I briefly removed the battery (which I've had to do to Pocket PCs before, to clear hangs that a soft reset won't fix), and when it came back, I saw the "Tap Here to begin using your Pocket PC" screen.

Thinking it was just a glitch, I started from scratch, and installed all of my apps again. Everything was fine. Soft resets worked fine. Until I installed the movianVPN software. Then I got the same problem and hard reset as described above. At first, I thought there was something wrong with my 4350, but I was able to reproduce this behavior (lock and hard reset on first soft reset after installing movianVPN client) no less than 6 times! I tried installing movianVPN as the first and only app, and every time I did, it blew my device away. I finally gave up, and just didn't install the software. The 4350 has run fine ever since (it wasn't a device problem, or a problem with other software).

Fast forward to today. I see there's a new version (3.10) of the software, and since I'd really like to be able to connect to work via VPN over the built-in wireless on my 4350. So I download and install the trial version of 3.10. It asks to soft reset. I do so, and the iPAQ locks up at a black screen. Power button doesn't work. App buttons don't work. Soft reset button doesn't work. Finally, I pop the battery for a second (NOT long enough to cause a hard reset - that's what the backup battery is for), and BAM! "Tap here to begin using your Pocket PC."

I'm going to be escalating this issue to Certicom/Movian support, but owners of 4300 series iPAQs beware - if you install this software, there is a good chance that you'll be facing a hard reset in the very near future...

Jason, or anyone else, have you heard any other reports of this problem on the 4300? Or, on the flip side, does anyone have this working without problems on a 4300 series iPAQ? Please post here if you have any information, as I'll be escalating all the details to Certicom.

Regards,

Josh

Here's the response I just got from Certicom:
Quote:
Hello Joshua,

Thank you for the feedback!
The iPAQ 4350 is not currently on our supported device list;
http://www.certicom.com/index.php?ac...t,mvpn_support
It has not been tested.

Version 3.07 would not have worked as it was built for the PPC 2002
Operating System.
I will forward a copy of this message to our Product Manager, and notify
you as soon as we have support for the 4350.

Regards,
Brian Morrison

Hrm. The version of 3.07 I had was intended for Pocket PC, but I got it through an internal pilot program at work, so maybe it wasn't publicly available.

Anyway, it sounds like anyone with a 4300 series iPAQ isn't supported in movian for now...

I had the hard reset problem with movianVPN when tried to use a Pocket PC 2002 version on my h3970 running Windows Mobile 2003.

As soon as I installed the 2003 version everything worked fine - on my h3970 and h4150.

I had heard of problems when using the wrong version for the wrong OS, so I was especially careful to use the 2003 version on the 2003 OS.

The email response from Certicom says that 3.07 was only for 2002, but our internal pilot program that I tested this as a part of at work had versions of 3.07 for both 2002 and 2003, and I was using the one for 2003. I had previously been using 3.07 for 2003 on my XDA running WM2003, and didn't have any problems.
