Default ListPro 4.0 Released

http://www.iliumsoft.com/site/lp/listpro.htm

One of my favorite apps for the Pocket PC has been improved yet again. ListPro 4 from Ilium Software is out now. I've been using it for a few months and it is a fantastic upgrade.

ListPro 4: New List Wizard

Features and enhancements over ListPro 3.0 include:
 Filter Bar - You can now filter on any column.
 List Flattening - You can change an outline into a flat list and back again. This is useful for sorting, grouping, filtering and other things. You have to see this in use to understand it.
 Drag to Indent - Indent an item by dragging it to the right or left.
 Export To List - Choose the items and columns you want to use to create a new list.
 Move/Copy to List - Send items to an existing list (faster than cut and paste).
 Email Lists - Automatically send a list as an attachment to an email.
 Easier Column Management - Columns are easier to create, arrange, hide and show.
 List Note - A note field for each list to give you a place for information that applies to the whole list.
 New List Wizard - Simplifies setting up a new list quickly.
 Clear Column - Quickly clears all entries in a column.
 Change Column Type - A Number column can be changed to String, or a String to Category.
 All New Template Management - this is a killer change from 3.0. In 4.0, templates go in \My Documents\Templates rather than the \Program Files\ListPro folder. This means when you make changes to your templates on your PC or Pocket PC, those changes are synced to the other device.

ListPro 4.0 Professional Edition is $29.95 and that includes both a Pocket PC and Windows PC version. There is a 30 day trial available. If you purchased ListPro 3.0 after October 20, 2003, your upgrade is free, otherwise it is $16.95. You should check the ListPro 4.0 Upgrade page at their site.

I know there are some big fans of this program on this site, Ed included... but what are you all using the software for? I poked around at the trial version last year sometime and I could tell the program was well-made, but I kinda drew a blank at what uses I would have for something like this. Thoughts?

It is a very handy app. Although it refers to "Lists", it is better to think in terms of databases. I use it primarily for expense tracking... but you could use it for anything you would use a flatfile database. Maintain collection lists, home inventory, you probably could even use it as an electronic checkbook recorder.

I also keep a "list" of places I visit with driving directions for each.

As for this upgrade, IMO, it isn't worthy of a "point" release (3.0 -> 4.0) nor worth the $16.95 upgrade price. So I'll be sticking with my 3.0 for quite some time. But for anyone who doesn't yet own it... this is one of the few "must have" applications for your PPC.

Lists I create or reference:

* Backpacking items/todos
* Lesson Outlines (for instance, for teaching a class on digital imaging)
* Fitness Tracking
* Gift / Thank You tracking
* HAM Radio reference
* Home Maintenance
* Movies (owned/rented/viewed)

and various other things that don't fit well into other programs like Excel, TextMaker, PocketInformant.

Also, I really like having a custom desktop application to view/edit the same data there...

You could use it as any kind of database!!

You can customize the number of fields, field types (number, string, dropdown, etc.), calculations, roll-up hierarchies, etc.

You have the power to organize in order of any field, filter by field values, add checkboxes or flags,...

To call this a list application is greatly simplifying the power of this program.

These latest features make ListPro more and more RDBMS-like in it's database characteristics! Fantastic!!

I purchased this a while back and didn't use it for 3 months and then it started to dawn on me the various ways I could use it... now I can't live without it.

I just recently purchased Listpro for my engineering work. I build custom Infrared sensors. I have created alist I use for the completion of all the documentation necessary to get a product into production. This list keeps track of drawings, part numbers, etc. I have created flags/check boxes to allow me check off items as they are completed.

Just to give you an idea what I use it for:

I have 4 listpro lists.

My Business List File.clf - business items
My Personal List File.clf - personal items
Info Database.clf - a 400K list of just stuff - very static info. I keep it in a separate file so that when I make changes to my personal items, this 400K of items doens't get ActiveSync'd over. Painful over GPRS.
Private lists.clf - small list of things I keep password protected.

I spend about 50% of my time between the personal and business lists. HEre is a sneak peek at my personal lists. My business list is more complex, with many subfolders.

Just to let everyone know that there is a PPCThoughts discount that can be used for this purchase. Dropped the upgrade price to a more manageable $9.95. Just wanted to make everyone aware of that.
