Default The e805's VGA Screen And Compatibility With Windows Mobile 2003

There's been considerable discussion about the e805's 480x640 screen, and for good reason: the ability to either view more information or the same information at a higher quality is appealing. It was therefore a bit disappointing, but not surprising, to hear that Toshiba restricted the 480x640 mode to just the ClearVue applications: presumably, they wanted to avoid support issues and wanted only official-high-resolution-supporting programs to appear when you switch resolutions.

However, the Pocket PC community has developed a solution, called ResFix, that lets you use most any application on WM2003 in 640x480. You can read more about that on this Brighthand thread.

James, over at BostonPocketPC, took the e805 out for a detailed spin, and also gave ResFix a close look. His experiences, plus some great screenshots, are available in this article -- he tested the hires mode with many applications, and found most of them worked:

"Most applications I've tried so far work fine in VGA with very few exceptions. A few of the applications that do run at this higher resolution do so by o*nly using a quarter of the screen which makes for some very tiny, humorous screens. But even displaying such small screens they are still useable and legible. The display is just so nice. And the entire device is very fast due to it's fast CPU (PXA263) and the fact that Toshiba put 2 MB of video memory dedicated to the ATI graphics controller it uses."

I wish I didn't see this; now I want one! (Some full-sized screenshots, unlike the ones in the article, are available here).

Great to see it works!
Too bad the reviewer did a really poor job resizing the images, I wish he just posted them resized to 240x320 with links for the respectives full size screenshots.

That would've been a good idea.

I'm going to have to wait until HP get's to this resolution... There are some HP specific peripherals that I need to use and the resolution advantage isn't that big a deal for me. Especially since I just bought my 5550. Life is good.

This was not James' doing - I take full responsibility. I had to make some judgment calls regarding viewing for Pocket PC, as well as overall download time and bandwidth.

I post some of James' screen captures in an article prior to the posting of the review. They are in 480x640 format, and can be seen here.

You can use a CF (or SDIO, presumably?) card.

I understand that, but since I currently swap out cards several times a day, my next PPC is going to have both radios built in. That's why it's good the e800 doesn't quite meet my spec, since I can't afford it right now.
David's Spec:
CF
SDIO
128MB
BT
WiFi
Great Screen.

See, it comes too close for comfort.

OK I have to admit Im getting a bit teary eyed over this. OH MY GOD. I have never seen a more beautiful thing in my life. At first I thought WTF is with the blury screen shots but those new ones. That is the most gorgeous, drop dead screen Ive ever seen. And to think next year every Pocket PC is going to have this. Forget about Matrix Revolutions 2004 will be Pocket PC: Revolutionary. This, IMHO, will do for Pocket PC 2004 what the first iPaq did for Pocket PC 2000. Its going to draw a whole new crowd of users. Janak you just made my day and made me uberly depressed. I dont know what to do now. I was so looking forward to purchasing the 4150 next month and now. *sighs* I just dont know what to do. The Tosh looks bulky but that screen. OH MY GOD! :frusty:

I know I'm going to keep my Axim until we know what next year has in store. From what we've seen so far, 2004 should be great.

Thanks for the link

Interesting thing to notice is that the pixel orientation from the Toshiba e800 LCD is the inverse of common LCDS, at least this is what we can tell by looking the way clear type fonts are draw, BGR system
